Kitts Maquoketa Record, March 8, 1905 WILLIAM D. KITTS was born in Ripley County, Indiana, 66 years ago and died in his home in Maquoketa, March 4, 1905, after an illness of six weeks. Mr. Kitts enlisted on April 18, 1861, in Company K, 12th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers for three months, served the full term and enlisted in Company B, 82nd Indiana Volunteers and served until the end of the war, 48 months of active service during the war of the rebellinon. He was present at the Battles of Perryville, Stone River, Tollhoma and Chickamauga campaigns. At the seige of Chattanooga, the Battle of Missionary Ridge, in the Atlanta campaign, the march to he sea and through the Carolinas with Sherman. He was mustered into R. M. Anderson, 5th Regiment, Union Veterans Union in Maquoketa in 1897 and was an honored member until his discharge by death. He was a gallant, fearless soldier and an honest law abiding citizen and his memory shall be cherished in the hearts of his old comrades. The funeral service was held at the house conducted by Rev. J. F. Black, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock followed by interment at Mt. Hope cemetery with ritual service of the Union Veterans Union.
