Shelby County, Indiana From the National Archives, Washington, DC: Declaration for Widow's Increase of Army Pension. UNDER ACT OF JULY 25, 1866. State of Indiana County of Shelby, SS: On this sixteenth day of November A. D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty six, personally appeared before me, Alonzo Blair Clerk of a Court of Record, within and for the County and State aforesaid Mary McFerran a resident of Smithland in the County of Shelby and State of Indiana, aged 34 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the second section of the Act of Congress increasing the pensions of widows and orphans, approved July 25, 1866.  That she is the widow of Lewis McFerran who was a Private in Company D, commanded by Capt E. T. McCrea in the 33 Regiment of Ind. Vols in the war of 1861; - - - and that by reason of his death in the service aforesaid she has been granted a pension of eight dollars per month, in accordance with a certificate numbered 35424 bearing date December the 9th 1864.  She further swears that she has the following named children of her deceased husband and herself, under sixteen years of age, who are now living, the dates of whose births were as given below, to-wit: John T. born on the sixth day of June 1857 and William P. born on the twenty-first day of March 1860. She further declares that she has not re-married since the death of her said husband, nor has she abandoned the support of any one of the children above named, nor permitted any one of the same to be adopted by any other person or persons as his, her, or their child. And further that her said husband has left no minor children by a former marriage. She hereby constitutes and appoints George W. Gadd of Shelbyville State of Indiana, her true and lawful Attorney, with full power of substitution to prosecute this claim for pension, and to receive the certificate which may be issued therefor.
