War of 1861.             No. 1459, M-II '84             Wm B. Burford, Printer, Indianapolis. DECLARATION FOR INVALID ARMY PENSION. STATE OF Indiana COUNTY OF Shelby SS: On this 31 day of January, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-8, personally appeared before me, Thomas S. Jones, Clerk of the Circuit Court, a Court of Record, within and for the County and State aforesaid, James C. Bennett, aged 53 years, a resident of Shelbyville, in the County of Shelby, in the State of Indiana, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical James C. Bennett, who enlisted in the service of the United States at Shelbyville, County of Shelby, State of Indiana, on the 29 day of July, 1862, as a Private in Company B of the 70 Regiment of Indiana Vol Inft, commanded by David T. Sleeth, and was honorably discharged at Washington, State of Dist. Columbia, on the 8 day of July, 1865.  That his personal description is as follows: Age, 53 years, height 6 feet, 1/4 inches; complexion, dark; hair, brown, eyes, gray.  That while he was a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty, at or near a place called Lavern, State of Tennessee, on or about the 2d day of August, 1863      (1.)  He contracted chronic diarrhoea and piles and resulting disease of rectum.  Caused by change of water, climate, and diet incident to camp life. Also while in the line of duty in the campaigns of Atlanta and the march to the sea, he incurred sore feet resulting in disease of feet, caused by long and hard marches. He was not treated in the hospital for either of said diseases, but was treated by Dr. A. W. Reagan, Reg't. Surgeon, for diarrhoea and piles. He was mustered out of said Reg't. as 2d Lieutenant of Co. B, 70 Ind. Infty Vols. Since leaving the service he has resided in Shelbyville, Shelby Co. Ind, and his occupation has been that of a decorator.  That prior to his entry into the service above named, he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a decorator.  That he is now 2/3d disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries above described, received in the service of the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. --------------------------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
