ROCKPORT.

The county seat of Spencer county, situated on a high bluff on the Ohio river,
fifty miles above Evansville, and one hundred and fifty below Louisville. It has
a population of 2000, has four churches, a college, an excellent system of
graded schools, and numerons [sic] stores, shops, and beautiful private
residences, and others in contemplation. The Methodists are building a fine
church edifice at an estimated cost of $15,000; the public school building
erected last year cost $16,000; the Rockport Collegiate Institute takes high
rank among institutions of its class in the West. The surrounding country is
diversified with plains, undulating uplands and river bottomlands of great
fertility and well timbered. Stone coal is abundant, furnishing fuel for the
manufacturing establishments of the place, which embrace one distillery, a
brewery, woolen factory, large flouring mill, saw mill and smaller factories. It
has two weekly newspapers, the Journal and Democrat, and two good hotels.
