SOUTH BEND.

The Capital of St. Joseph county, situated on the St. Joseph river, and on the
Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana railroad, eighty-six miles east of Chicago.
It has nearly 10,000 inhabitants, and is steadily increasing in substantial
wealth and population. It is beautifully located on the west bank of the river;
at its southernmost bend, fifty miles from where it empties into Lake Michigan.
The city occupies an elevated and commanding position—is well built, with wide,
well graded streets, and substantial business houses and elegant private
residences. The river furnishes inexhaustible water power, which has been well
improved by numerous manufactories, among: which are extensive flouring and saw
mills, furniture, carriage and agricultural implement factories, foundries and 
machine shops, tanneries, woolen mills, and others of less importance. The
educational facilities of the city are unequaled. Notre Dame University, under
the control of the Roman Catholic church, is situated two miles from the city;
St. Mary's academy, under the care of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, is one mile
north of the city; and St. Patrick's select school is adjoining St. Patrick's
church, in the city. The Northern Indiana college, under the patronage of the
Methodist church, is also located here; and these, with the excellent common
schools, make this one of the most prominent educational cities of the West. The
surrounding country is well timbered and watered, the soil is exceedingly
fertile, and adapted to the raising of small fruits and vegetables, immense
quantities of which are shipped to eastern and western markets.
