(1899) CRAWFORD, NOAH, born in Columbiana County, Ohio, June 30, 1844, came to Sullivan County a married man in 1867. first settled at Farmersburg, later in Jackson township, on a farm. There established Crawford's Mill and ran it some 16 years, and also located Alum Cave, of pure alum, and caused to be established Alum Cave postoffice; opened Alum Cave coal mines and operated them up to 1887, when the New Pittsburg Coal & Coke Co. was organized. He secured branch of the E. & T. H. railroad to the mines, and later withdrew from the company. He now has controlling interest in the Farmersburg Coal & Mining Co. In l894 he contracted to light the streets of Sullivan for seven years, from Jan. 1, 1895, and established the Citizens Light and Power Co. of Sullivan, of which he is sole proprietor. His electric light plant is first class throughout, and he has made a success of the business in every particular. Additional Comments: Hamilton Twp.
