(1899) GILL, JAMES H., lives contentedly on a fine farm in section 10 in Gill township. He is the son of James and Susannah (Bennett) Gill, the father coming from North Carolina and the mother from Virginia. The grandfather was Wm. Gill, who had lived and married in the far southern state, moving at an early day to Kentucky. He moved from there in 1808 to Sullivan County, which was then a part of Knox County, locating in section 2, which is now known as Gill Township. He was the first settler in that township, which was named for him and his two brothers. Then Indians infested the territory in abundance, In 1818 he entered land within half a mile of New Lebanon, the tract being at present owned by John E. Bremer. Later he took possession of an 80 acre tract now owned by a Mr. Branham. Mr. Gill served with General Harrison in 1812, one of his brothers being in the battle of Tippicanoe. Seven childnen were raised to maturity: James, George, Joseph Gill, and Matilda Bnotts, Drusella Cullum are dead; Isaac W. and Margaret Edmiston are the only two children living. The father of our subject, James H. Gill, was born Dec. 18, 1801, marrying Susannah Bennett, the daughter of Thomas Bennett, in 1828. He settled upon a farm and improved it, passing to the beyond in 1871 at Hot Springs, Ark., where his remains were buried. The wife died Sept. 14, 1835. They were the patents of three children: Thomas, James H. McGill, and Emily M. Griffith. James H. Gill was born May 15, 1831 on the farm now owned by him; he received his education at Greencastle, subsequently teaching school for ten years, in Sullivan, Vigo and Pike counties. He married Sarah A. Burnett, a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Allen) Burnett in 1852; he was married a second time, April 16, 1863, to Rebecca E. A. Armstrong, a native of Green County, Ind., and a daughter of James and Eveline Armstrong. She died Feb. 13, 1879, aged 38 years, 8 months and 8 days. Five children were born to this union: Susannah E. Hunt, Ira Jay, Ellen Estella, James Cary and Rebecca Viola. Mr. Gill was married again in 1883 to Laura J. Alger, a native of Green County, and the daughter of Wm. R. and Elizabeth J. Alger. Mrs. Gill was born Dec. 20, 1854, no children being born to them by this union. Both are members of the Methodist church, the husband holding the office of steward for many years. Additional Comments: Gill Twp.
