(1899) LILLIE, SAMUEL, is a prosperous farmer living in section 29 of Gill Township. He is the son of John M. C. and Elisabeth (McClure) Lillie, who came to Sullivan County from Knox County at an early day. Samuel Lillie was born and raised in Gill Township. He enlisted in October 1861 in Company "I" Forty-first Indiana volunteer cavalry, serving with distinction three years. Mr. Lillie operated in the army of the Cumberland; was captured by Morgan at Hartsville, Tenn., Dec. 7, 1863. He married Mrs. Mary J. Ridgeway in 1874, three children being born to this union as follows: John, Charles and Jacob S. Lillie. Mrs. Lillie is a consistent and active member of the Christian church.
