(1899) SPRINGER, CAPT. T. B., owns a highly productive farm in Gill township. He is the son of Jesse W. and Lucy (Davidson) Springer, both of whom are natives of Kentucky. The father settled in Sullivan County in 1820, purchasing a tract of land in section 14; he afterwards cleared a farm in section 11, living there till 1878. The land is at present owned by Ursilla Arbaugh. Mr. Springer subsequently moved to New Lebanon, where he died in 1888; his wife preceded him in 1838. They had three children, John D., Leni and T. B. Springer, the first two being dead. The subject of this sketch was born Nov. 23, 1836, on the old farm in section 11, being raised there. He received his education at New Lebanon, was married Dec. 13, 1857 to Charlotte A. Merry, a native of Gill township, and a daughter of Martin and Louisa (Tichenor} Merry, who were early settlers in the township. Thomas B. Springer has been a farmer all his life. He enlisted September, 1863 in Company "G," One Hundred and Twentieth regiment, in the Eleventh cavalry, being made a commissioned second lieutenant, later promoted to captain. He operated under General Wilson in the army of General Thomas, he served for two years with distinction, being mustered out in September, 1865. In the summer of 1865 he Served on the plains in Kansas and engaged in many battles with the Indians. Capt. Springer was never wounded nor captured; he was never in the hospital. He lived on the farm owned by Ed. B. Springer about ten months, making all the improvements there; he then located on his present farm. Mr. and Mrs. Springer are parents of the following children, death never entering the family circle: Leni, Ed. B., John M., Samuel M., C. Frank Springer, Lucy Mason, Katie Allen. They are members of the Methodist church, of which the father is steward. Capt. Springer belongs to Silver's Post, No. 435 G. A.
