(1899) WILLARD, RUFUS O., owns a richly developed farm in section 29 in Gill Township, He is the son of Orson and Elisabeth (McCutcheon) Willard, the father being a native of Utica, N. Y., the mother coming from Virginia. The elder Willard came to Indiana in 1807, when the state was still it territory. He settled upon the farm then called Willard's Prairie, which is now owned by the son. He taught school for many years, being amoug the pioneer educators. The father married in Sullivan County, his wife dying in April 1840, Since her death he moved about from place to place, taking his family in 1852 across the plains to California, he reached the "Golden State" Aug. 7, 1853, after spending the winter with the Mormons at Salt Lake City, he died March 20, 1854 and was buried at Stockton, Cal. Three children, two of whom are living, survived him: Isabel Garret and Rufus O. Willard. Leoni, the third child, who has since died, was the wife of Capt, James H. Garrett, of Lawrence, Kan.; Isabel is the widow of Col. John A. Garrett, formerly a prominent resident of Newton, Ia. Rufus O. Willard was born Jan. 8, 1838. After his return from California he lived with his sister at Carlisle, Ind., till 1862. He was married May 7, 1860 to Mary L. Owen, a native of Carlisle, she being the daughter of Benj. F. and Sarah J. (Barker) Owen, both of whom came from Macon, Ga. They were the parents of nine children, three of whom are now living: Sarah Reed, Mrs. Willard and John Owen. Mi. and Mrs. Willard have eight children, as follows: Louisa B. Engle, Anna Davis, Catharine Sanders, Laura Huntwork, Mayme, Roxie, Arson and Beldon Willard. Mrs. Willard is one of the leading members of the Christian church. Mr. Willard has been a farmer since 1862, making a specialty of stock raising.
