AKIN, HON. CHARLES T., born in Carlisle, Ind., Oct. 27, 1848. Received a liberal education and early engaged in mercantile business. Is now a member of the firm of R. W. Akin's Sons, merchants, bankers, millers and farmers. Elected to Indiana House of Representatives in 1880 and 1882; also represented Sullivan and Greene counties in the State Senate sessions of 1891 and 1893, where he took high rank as a careful and intelligent legislator, being identified with the important legislation of that period. Residence, Carlisle. ACKER, JONAS, born in Germany. Came to America, 1870. Came to Sullivan county, 1889. Is in charge of the only Second Hand Store in Sullivan. Also handles a fine line of NEW Stoves, Furniture, Mattresses, Springs, etc. All kinds of Repairing done to order. Store under I. O. O. F. Temple. BUFF, GEORGE W., graduated at the Law School of Ky., 1871. Elected Judge of the Circuit Court, then composed of Vigo and Sullivan counties. Served 6 years. Since leaving the bench has been practicing his profession in Sullivan. Firm name Buff & Nesbit. (See Farmers' Directory.) BRIGGS, JOHN C., born in Carlisle, Ind., April 2, 1841. Served almost four years in the Union Army, from 1861 to 1865. Prosecuting Attorney from 1870 to 1872, Representative from Sullivan county from 1878 to 1880. Served on the bench from '88 to '94 of the 14th Judicial Circuit. Admitted to the bar 1870, and admitted to practice before Supreme Court, 1876, and at same time licensed to practice before the U. S. Court. BLUE, PERRY H., born in Knox county, Ohio, Nov. 12, 1851; moved with his father to Greene county, Ind., in 1854; resided on a farm until 1866, when he came to Sullivan. Was employed as a clerk by his father and others until l872, when he commenced the study of law. Was admitted to practice in the circuit and supreme courts shortly after. Served as Deputy District Attorney under the old Common Pleas system until the court was abolished. Was town attorney for several years and also served as Justice of the Peace. Elected Prosecuting Attorney of the 14th Judicial Circuit, composed of Sullivan and Vigo counties, in 1878; was appointed Superintendent of the Bloomfield Railroad Company in 1881, and the next year was also appointed Sup't of the Springfield, Effingham & Southeastern railroad, holding these positions until 1886, when these two roads were consolidated under the name of the Indiana & Illinois Southern, when he was elected General Manager of the new Company, which position he has since held. Was a delegate to the democratic national convention at St. Louis in 1888; was elected a trustee of the Southern Hospital in 1889 by the legislature, and re-elected in 1891, his term expiring 1895, under the terms of the new law requiring the board to be bi-partisan. He is a partner in the firm of Engle & Blue, hardware dealers, is President of the Merom Gravel Company, is interested in farming and various other enterprises. Relying entirely upon his own resources, Mr. Blue has been a very successful business man. He was married in 1890, at Evansville to Miss Lulu I. Thompson, and has one child, a daughter, born Oct. 10, 1894. BILLMAN, DR. G. G., born in Sullivan county, 1868. Raised on his father's farm. Graduated at the Ind., Dental College, 1891. Married Miss Belle, daughter of Martin Campbell, 1892. Has since practiced his profession in Sullivan, East Side Square. BILLMAN, J. M., DR., born in Coshocton Co., O., 1864; came to Sullivan county 1866. Graduated at the Indiana Opthalmic College 1894, and will graduate at the Bennett Opthalmic College, Chicago, in March 1896. Will practice in Sullivan. Married Miss Zetta, daughter of T. J. Wolfe. BASLER, FERDINAND E., born near Sullivan Oct. 21, 1854; attended public schools in Sullivan until the age of 14 when he entered the service of the E. & T. H. R. R. in March, 1870; served as bill clerk in the freight office at Terre Haute until Oct 1, 1871; was made agent at Sullivan station, and so continued until Nov. 15, 1886, when he become Gen'l Freight and Passenger Agent of the I. & I. S. R. R., continuing in that capacity until Feb. 15, 1894. Served as deputy Internal Revenue Collector until May 25, 1895. Is now Train Master of the I. & I. S. R. R. Mr. Basler is a good business man and has always enjoyed the fullest confidence of the best citizens of Sullivan. BELL, W. A., born in Sullivan county, June 26, 1866. Was employed by Mose Wilkey as a clerk in 1883, also clerked in J. T. Reid's grocery for five years. Opened a grocery store at No. 7 South Side in the fall of 1889, and continues to do a good business at the same stand. His stock is clean and neat, and Mr. Bell is a good business man. BAYS, JOHN S., born in Greene county, 1850. Attended the State University from '67 to '69, law school same place from '71 and '72. Admitted to the bar 1870. Married Miss Hettie G., daughter of John Fenton, 1876. Came to Sullivan county, 1874, and has since been one of the leading Attorney of the State. BARNARD, W., born in Bucksport, Maine, April 30, 1854. Came to Sullivan county, March, 1872. Commenced in the grocery business on the West Side, 1874; continued the same four years. Farmed until 1891, when he entered his present place of business, a grocery, at No. 5 South Side. Married Miss Rachel L., daughter of A. Knotts, of New Lebanon, June 10, 1875. CROWDER, CLAUDE H., born in Graysville, Sullivan county, Jan. 11, 1862. A Groceryman during '82 to '83. In March, 1883, he engaged in the Boot and Shoe business—known at present as the "Foot Fitter." CROWDER, NEVILLE, born in Sullivan, 1864. Married Miss Myrtle, daughter of Cap. Wm. T. Crawford, Sept. 1, 1890. Has been in the boot and shoe business for the last 10 years; at present with the Foot Fitters. Residence, Thompson street. CRAWLEY, MURRAY D., born July 1862, in Sullivan county; attended the Sullivan public schools until 18 years of age. Commenced work in the E. & T. H. office at Sullivan, with Mr. F. E. Basler and remained there during 1881-82; was then appointed Deputy Auditor of Sullivan county, which position he held until the fall of 1886, when he accepted a position in the Auditor's office of Vigo county. In the fall of 1887 received an appointment as assistant in the Auditing Department of the I. & I. S. R. R., and in March 1894 was appointed to the position of General Passenger and Baggage Agent of the same company, which position he still occupies. CUNNINGHAM, F. M., born in Sullivan county, Apr. 26, 1865. Taught school six years. Married Miss Nora E., daughter of C. C. Wolfe, Sept. 24, 1889. Elected County Surveyor, 1892, and re-elected to the same office, 1894. Residence, North Main street. CRAWFORD, NOAH, born in Columbia county, O., 1844. Came to Sullivan county, Ind., 1867. Owned a Feed and Saw Mill at Alum Cave 15 years; a prosperous farmer of Jackson Tp., for 25 years. Took charge of the Citizens Light &. Power Co., Sullivan, Jan. 1, 1895, and has one of the best equipped plants in the State, situated near the I. & I. S. Depot. DENNY, WILLIAM M., born in Monroe Co., Ind., April 21, 1836; came to Sullivan county 1849; engaged in farming all his life, teaching school in the winter season for several years. Served as assessor of Curry township. Was nominated and elected Circuit Clerk of Sullivan county in 1890, assumimg the duties of the office March 28, 1892, and his term will expire March 28, 1896. Mr. Denney was married Jan. 8, 1861, to Miss Sarah Edmonds, who died in 1867, and again April 1, 1869, to Miss Nancy A. Hendricks. He has an interesting family and enjoys the good will and respect of the people of Sullivan county. DEAR, R. M., born in Clarke county. Ind., 1847. Served almost 3 years in the civil war, in the 43rd Ind. Vol. Inf. Came to Sullivan, 1876, and has since been engaged in the Hardware business at No. 10 South Side. DAVIS, CHARLES L., born in Sullivan county, Nov. 30, 1849. Engaged in the hardware business 1869, with his brother Hezekiah Davis under the firm name of H. Davis & Bro. H. Davis died in 1872, and John Davis, father of C. L. and H. Davis, became a partner in the business, the firm name being C. L. Davis & Co. In Dec, 1874, Ben Davis, became a partner and the firm was known as John Davis & Sons. John Davis died in Feb., 1891, and since that time the style of the firm has been John Davis's Sons. C. L. Davis was twice elected county treasurer. DAVIS, BEN, born in Sullivan Co., Oct 6, 1852; remained on his father's farm until Dec. 28, 1874; came to Sullivan and engaged in the hardware business, which he has since followed. Married Miss Emma J., daughter of David McKinney, Feb., 1893. John Davis's Sons' hardware store is the largest retail store of the kind in the state. EATON, W. G., born in Sullivan county, 1855. Entered the Farmers State Bank in 1886. Was elected Assitant Cashier in 1888. Has since retained the same position. Married Miss Ollie, daughter of Capt. R. R. Cluggage, 1876. Followed the Boot and Shoe business 15 years previous to going into the bank. FREEMAN, PROF. C. A., born in Sullivan, Dec. 19, 1863; graduated at the Indiana State Normal School June, 1891, was principal of the Sullivan-high school 1892 and 1893; a student at the Indiana University 1894 and 1895. Was principal of the Linton high school. At present is Supt. at Orleans high school. FRAKES, W. R., horn in Sullivan county, Ind., Nov. 18, 1845. Raised on his father's farm. Taught school 10 years. Elected Justice of the Peace Jackson Tp., 1880, and served 12 years; elected County Treasurer 1894, sworn in 1895. Residence, Sullivan. GOODMAN, SOL, The old reliable Clothier of Sullivan county. Established 1866. Always keeps the largest, stock on hands and sells as low as any house in the county. Satisfaction always guaranteed. HINKLE, CARL R., born in Sullivan 1863; received a thorough education in the graded schools of the city, having the advantage of several years' special course in the high school; was employed during vacations as a salesman by various parties, and during the last three mouths of his graduating year in the high school, was book keeper for the Farmers' National Bank, serving in this capacity half the day and maintaining his class standing during the other half. On graduating, he served the bank in various capacities from 1882 until 1886, when he assumed the duties of Assistant Auditor of the Indiana and Illinois Southern Railroad, being promoted to Auditor of this road a few months later, which position, together with that of Pay Master, he has since held. Mr. Hinkle is one of the popular young men of the city, is Manager of the celebrated Eclipse band, the excellence of which is largely due to his efficient supervision; was the promote! of and is a prominent member of the Commercial Club and is identified with many movements of public interest. HERBERT, W. R., born in Sullivan county, 1863, Sept. 19. Was raised on his father's farm, and there remained until the year 1889. Entered the Livery business at Oden, Ind., and in May, 1885, formed a partnership with C. W. Denney, under the firm name of Herbert & Denney, Livery, Feed & Sale Stable, Buss Line, etc. HARRIS, ORION B., born in Knox county, O., April 15, 1859. Graduated at Kenyon College, 1885. Came to Sullivan county same year and commenced the practice of Law, and 1893 formed partnership with Wm. T. Douthitt. Firm known as Harris & Douthitt, N. E. Cor., Sullivan. HOKE, J. F., born is Sullivan county, 1839. Raised on his father's farm. Left the farm at 20 years of age. Entered the civil war, 1862. Served almost three years. Engaged in the Hardware business 1864 Followed that business 24 years, and 1891 entered the Farmers State Bank, of which he is President. HOKE, JACOB FREDERICK, JR., born in Jeffersontown, Ky., Aug. 9, 1870. Came to Sullivan Jan 1, 1891. Employed in the Hardware Store at No. 10 South Side, Jan. 1, 1891, and has since remained. Elected Clerk and Treasurer of Sullivan, May 6, 1895. HAWKINS, WILLIAM H., born near Graysville, Sullivan Co., Dec. 31, 1858; was educated in the public schools of the county and the Northern Indiana Normal at, Valparaiso, Ind. Worked on a farm until 1878; clerked in a general store at Shelburn until 1884, when he was appointed deputy Sheriff. Served four years as deputy Sheriff, and was elected Sheriff of Sullivan county Nov. 1888, and re-elected in 1890, his second term expired Nov. 18, 1892. Was appointed United States Marshal for the District of Indiana March 22, 1893, and at the time of his appointment was the youngest United States Marshal ever appointed in the United States. Marshal Hawkins' success in the trying times of the miners' and railroaders' strikes in 1894 was phenomenal, and at the close of the trouble, he received congratulatory letters from the leaders of both sides to the controversies, expressing appreciation of his courtesy, firmness and good judgment. Mr. Hawkins has purchased a tine farm near Sullivan and will return here at the close of his official term. He was married in 1880 to Miss Etta E. Collier, and has one son 14 years of age. HUTCHISON, ROBERT H. B., born in Van Buren county, Iowa, Aug. 26, 1872; came to Sullivan county in 1876; attended the public schools until 15 years of age, when he entered the service of the E. & T. H. R. R., and was afterward with the Adam Express Company. Become an operator at the I. & I. S. station in 1890, continuing about a year and a half; went to Bucyrus, Ohio, and was in the employ of T. & O. C. R. R. for five months, when he returned to Sullivan and again took a position at the I. & I. S. freight office; was transferred to the general office and made train dispatcher in Sept., 1893, which position he still holds. HAYS JOHN T., was born in Beaver county, Pa., Nov. 11, 1842. Graduated at Iron City Commercial College, Pittsburg, Pa., June 16, 1864. Graduated at Mt. Union College, O. Was Superintendent of Public School at Sullivan, Ind., in 1872 and '73, since which time he has been engaged in the practice of Law in the same office that he now occupies. HUNT, CHARLES D., born in Sullivan county, Oct, 1861 Remained on his father's farm until the age of 20. Graduated at the De Pauw University, 1888. Admitted to the bar, 1889. Married Miss Sarah W., daughter of Charles Scott. Elected Towu Clerk, 1891-92; also elected Prosecuting Attorney of the 14th Judicial Circuit, 1894. KRUG, OTTO, born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1853, of Lutheran parents Came to this country at the age of thirteen, alone, to make his home with an uncle. Having been raised, in the dry goods business, he opened up business for himself in Sullivan, Dec. 4, 1885. The stock grew from year to year as trade increased, until now it is probably the largest store in the county devoted exclusively to dry goods. The present location, a magnificent stone front building, was purchased in 1890, and as lately remodeled and enlarged, has no equal in this section for light, space and general adaptation to the business. Buying for cash and selling for cash, has been the foundation upon which this success was founded, and it has long since been learned by the public that for real values, the best goods at the lowest prices, Otto Krug's Dry Goods and Carpet Store deserves first place. LUTZ, C. M., born in Huntingburg, Dubois county, 1842. Came to Sullivan county, 1887. Married Miss Sarah A., daughter of Samuel South, 1884. Mr. Lutz served in the 27th Ind. Volunteers; has been a photographer since 1861, and during the year 1891 formed a partnership with W. F. DeVol. Gallery over the S. W, Cor. square. LUZADER, BARTON W., the oldest native child born in Sullivan, also born in the first house built in town, on Oct. 30, 1846. Served almost three years in the civil war, 1st Ind. heavy artillery. Married Miss Isabel], daughter of Tarlton Hawkins, Sept. 5, 1869. Elected Justice of the Peace, 1890, and re-elected, 1894. Office, N. E. Cor square. LOMAX, C. E., born in Orange county, Ind., Nov. 10, 1873; came to Sullivan Feb., 1895; married Miss Vina, danghter of Wm. A. Drake. Established the first steam laundry in Sullivan. Office, North Court St. LEACH, MRS. ANTOINETTE D., born in Indianapolis, 1859; came to Sullivan in 1870. Graduated at the Ascension Seminaiy, Sullivan, 1875. Was a teacher in the public schools four years, married to Geo. W. Leach 1879; was a stenographer and court reporter from 1885 to 1890. Took up the study of law in 1888, and was admitted to the bar in 1893, after a memorable legal battle in the circuit and supreme courts. She was the first woman admitted to practice in this state, and the case thus settled the question in favor of allowing women to practice in Indiana courts. Mrs. Leach enjoys a good practice, and possesses a fine legal talent. LEACH, G. W., born in Grant county, Ind., 1848. Came to Sullivan county, 1863. In business in Sullivan since 1872. Owns 560 acies of land situated in various parts of Hamilton Tp.; also owner of the Blue Bull Stock Farm, where he keeps a number of noted race horses with records from 2:30 to 2:10. Mr. Leach has on hands and for sale horses, mares and colts, with records and without records, with pedigrees and without pedigrees. Write or call for particulars and prices. LANG, J. M., born in N. Y., 1855. Came to Sullivan county, 1871. Married Miss Btssie, daughter of Nathan Thomas, 1884. Served 7 years as Assistant Cashier and Book-keeper of the Sullivan County Bank, a school teacher 4 years previous to going in the Bank, now in charge of one of the leading Clothing Houses in Southern Ind., known as J. M. Lang & Co. LUCAS, RUSSELL & JOYCE, The old reliable Livery men. Feed, Sale and Transfer barn. Established 1877. Everything first-class. MASCHINO, T. H., born in Knox county, Ind., 1864. Descended from early French settlers. Married Miss Ora B. French in 1888, who died in 1891. Married to Miss Emma L. Thrasher in 1893. Has been a trusted employee of John Davis's Sons since 1891. A Democrat and takes interest in political matters. McCLANAHAN, J. A., born in Vigo county, 1860. Married Miss Allie, daughter of James Heap, 1881. Commenced business in Drugs and Groceries at New Lebanon, Ind., 1881, and there remained until 1892, then moved his business to Sullivan—since in charge of a first-class Grocery. M'KINLEY, J. R., boru in Sullivan Co., June 9, 1834. Married Miss Annie Gobin, of Ohio, March 1, 1855. Was a member of the firm of Crawley & McKinley, undertakers and furniture dealers, for twenty-five years. Formed a partnership with T. P. McBride in the same busiuess in 1890, under the firm name of McKinley & McBride. Enjoys a good trade and the esteem of everybody. M'BRIDE, T. P., boru in Galopolis, Ohio, 1857; came to Sullivan Co., 1868. Learned the carpenter trade, after which he commenced working for Crawley & McKinley in 1876 as undertaker. He holds diplomas in the Indiana school of embalming, and is a member of the firm of McKinley & McBride, furniture dealers and undertakers. MATTIX, JOHN A., born iu Sullivan Co., 1863. Married Miss-Mary F., daughter of Charles Riggs, 1884. Mr. Mattix was a farmer until the year 1890. He came to Sullivan and started a feed store. Is agent for McCormick Binder, Moline Plow Co., and various other agricultural implement companies. Office, corner Section and Washington Sts. McENENEY, PAT, born in Monaghan, Ireland, Sept. 9, 1838. Came to America, 1853. Came to Sullivan, 1859, engaged in the marble and granite business the same year and has since remained, operating the business successfully on a large scale. In June, 1862, married Miss Julia, A., daughter of James Harris; four children born to the union. NESBIT, WM. R., boru in Sullivan county, 1861. Graduated at Indiana State Normal School in 1885. Six years Supt. Sullivan Public Schools, 1885 to 1891. Married in 1888 to Effie I., daughter of U. Coulson. Admitted to the bar in 1891. Elected member of School Board in 1893. At present a member of the firm of Buff& Nesbit. Office North of Farmers' State Bank. PARKS, MARTIN O., born in Spencer, Ind., 1847. Came to Sullivan 1853; engaged in the dry goods business with his father in 1875, under the firm name of Geo. Parks & Co. Assumed full control 1879, under same name. Sold half interest to H. K. Ross July, 1894. Now firm of Parks & Ross. REED, JOE S., born in Sullivan county 1852; attended Sullivan public schools until 1864, when he moved with his father to a farm in Fairbanks township, where he remained until 1870, when at the age of 18 he entered Franklin College, remaining one year. He then returned to Sullivan and became a drug clerk, continuing in this capacity for four years, and in 1875 engaged in the drug business for himself, and has so continued to the present time, occupying a commodious building on the South Side, where he has recently added pianos and organs to his musical department, in a room especially constructed for the purpose. Mr. Heed is very popular with the people of the county. He has achieved more than local fame as a poet and impersonator. In 1893 he published "Winnowed Grasses", a volume of poems containing many rare gems, and has a second volume in course of preparation, entitled Nature's Reveries. He is a member of the Western Association of Writers of which organization he is treasurer. He enjoys the acquaintance of the leading literary people of this section. REED, PROF. ALEXANDER T., born near Bellfountaine, O., Dec. 17, 1854. Married Miss Lucinda J., daughter of John McGee, of Morningtown, O., Dec. 27, 1875. Graduated at Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa., 1879; at Worcester University, Worcester, O., 1880. Also graduated at the Indiana State Normal School, 1894. Came to Ind., 1880. Principal School at Romney, Ind., from '80 to '82; at Dayton, 1882 to 1885; at Oxford, Ind., from '85 to '89; at Winamac, 1889 to 1893. Teacher at Ind., State Normal School '93 to '95. At present Superintendent of Sullivan Public School. ROSS, HARRY K., born in Terre Haute, 1865; son of E. W Ross, son of Harry Ross, who is the oldest white man in Terre Haute to-day. H. K. Ross came to Sullivan, 1888. Engaged in the grocery business with J. T. Reid. Member of the dry goods firm of Parks & Ross since July 1894. RIGGS, J. R., born in Shelburn, Ind., Feb. 17, 1865. Married Miss Bessie C., daughter of M. T. Lewman (deceased), Sept. 11, 1895. Moved to Sullivan, 1879. Graduated at the Sullivan High School, 1882. Elected County Auditor, 1894. Residence, W. Washington street. RAINES, PROF. S. E., born in Sullivan, Dec 22, 1862; married Miss Sarah E., daughter of Wm. P. Maxwell, Dec. 31, 1885, and she died July 24, 1894. Mr. Raines graduated at the Indiana State Normal, 1888; was a teacher in the Sullivan high school for 9 years, the last two years of which he was Superintendent. Now a student at the Indiana University. SNOW, I. N., born in Sullivan county, April 14, 1856. Married Miss L. K., daughter of Robert K. Black (deceased), 1881. Mr. Snow entered the John Davis hardware store, 1885, as bookkeeper; served two years, thence promoted to head clerk and buyer. Residence, East Washington street. Was a farmer and stock dealer nine years previous to his coming to Sullivan. STOCK., DR. L. K., born iu Columbiana county, O., May 1, 1853. Came to Sullivan county, 1861. Graduated at the Eclectic Medical College, Cincinnati, O., 1882. Married Miss Emma F., daughter of Charles P. Cochran, 1883. Successfully practised his profession in various places until Nov. 15, 1895. Since located permanently in Sullivan. STEWART, DR. L. A., son of Lafayette Stewart (deceased), born in Sullivan county, 1864. Graduated in Sullivan High School in '83. Graduated at the Indiana Dental College, 1888, and the following year became a member of the Dental Association of the U. S. A. Has practised his profession at the present location successfully since 1889. Office No. 5 West Washington street. SMOCK, JOE K., proprietor City Drug Store, No. 11, north side, dealer in drugs, paints, wall paper, school supplies, books and everything found in a first-class store. All at reasonable prices. The patronage of the public respectfully solicited. STIVERS, G. R., born in Meggs county, O., 1856. Worked 3 1/2 years in the printing business. Came to Sullivan county, 1886. Elected member of Town Board, 1894. Has been a Butcher and Stock Dealer for the last 23 years. WOODS, WODFORD E., born South Port, Marion county, Ind., March 22, 1863; came to Sullivan in 1883; was employed as salesman for W. G. Young for two years, when he engaged in the clothing business and has so continued to the present time. Woods is now located on the north side in one of the best buildings in Sullivan and has one of the completest clothing stores in the state. He is a hustling business man, knowing the value of printer's ink, and has kept abreast of all competition. The trade goes to him because he has the goods, makes the prices, deals fairly and lets the people know it. When in need of anything in clothing or gents furnishings, call on Woods. WALKER, CHAS. P., born in Monroe county, Ind., 1867; was educated in the public schools at Bloomfield, Ind., and entered the service of the I. & I. S R. R. as General Manager's clerk in June 1887, remaining until Sept. 1890, when he became chief clerk to the Supt. of the E. & T. H. R. R., at Evansville, Ind. In Sept. 1892, again entered the service ot the I. & I. S. R. R., as General Manager's clerk, which position he held until March 1, 1894, when he was appointed General Freight Agent of the road, which position he still holds. Married Miss Mary E., daughter of Wm. T. Sibley, 1879. Elected two terms as Tp. Trustee of Gill, and elected County Auditor, 1886, and again in the year 1890. WHITE, S. A., born in Vigo county, Ind., 1849. Raised on a farm. Came back to Sullivau in 1884 after being in business in Petersburg, Carlisle and Terre Haute. Has since been one of the leading Druggists of Sullivan. Northeast Corner Square. WELMAN, CHARLES W., born in Crawford county, Ind., Sept. 18, 1858. Raised in Gibson county, Ind , and educated at the Fort Branch high school and the Northern Indiana Normal school at Valparaiso. Taught school from 1878 to l885,when he engaged in the newspaper business. Edited a number of local papers, and took charge of the Sullivan TIMES in April, 1888. Was elected County Superintendent of Schools of Sullivan county in June, 1891, and re-elected in 1893. Was nominated by the Democrats for Clerk of the Supreme Court of Indiana in 1894, but was defeated with the rest of the ticket. Was married in 1884 to Miss Frances R. McCleary, and has one child, a son, Victor A., eleven years old. WELLING, JOHN H., born in Harrison county, Ohio, 1847; moved to Coshocton Co., 1856; came to Sullivan county 1875. Farmed two years, and then established a carriage shop on the Terre Haute road north of Sullivan; erected a commodious building in Sullivan in 1892, where he continues in the carriage manufacturing and repairing business. By hard work Mr. Welling has been quite successful. WELLING, HOWBERT B., born in Coshocton county, Ohio, Jan. 5, 1874; came to Sullivan county with his father, John H. Welling, in 1875. Attended Sullivan public schools. Was married to Miss Helen Hoke in March 1894, who died in February 1895, leaving twin daughters one of which is still living. Became a partner with his father in business in 1894, the style of the firm being John H. Welling & Son, and is still connected with the business. WILLIS, CORNELIUS, W., born in Sullivan county, 1863; engaged in farming until 1893, when he established a notion store in Sullivan. By hard work and fair dealing his business has prospered, and he has recently established a branch store at Farmersburg. He is assisted by Mr. James Sinclair, an energetic young business man.
