Descendants of Heinrich David MARTZ and Barbara MILLER 1. Heinrich David1 MARTZ [2199], born 1746 in Rockland Twp., Berks, Penn.; christened 20 Jul 1749 in Mertz Church, Rockland Twp, Berks, Pennsylvania; died 1822 in Augusta, Northumberland, Penn.. He married abt. 1773 in Rockland Twp., Berks, Pa., Barbara MILLER [2198], born abt. 1752 in Rockland Twp., Berks, Pa.; died 15 Aug 1834 in Augusta, Northumberland, Penn.. Notes for Heinrich David MARTZ David Martz birth and death from his will Film 961022 Book 2 page 417 Northumberland, Pa. History of Northumberland Co., Pa. Film 845270 page 85. Heinrich David MARTZ-2199 there is some confusion on the date of birth because David wrote in his Last Will and Testament that he was in his seventy fifth year when the Will was written in 1820. So this above date has to be his baptism date recorded in the Church of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church at Dryville, Pennsylvania or "Mertz Church". So his actual year of birth is 1745 or 46. Heinrich David MARTZ died in Augusta Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania before 9 August 1822 because that is the date his Will was recorded for probate in the County Court house at Sunbury, Pennsylvania. On about 1778 Heinrich David MARTZ married Barbara MILLER in Berks County, Pennsylvania. She died in Augusta Township before 15 August 1834 when letters of Administration were filed to complete probate of David's Estate. Although David's name appears as Heinrich MERTZ in the listing of children of Johannes Henry MERTZ, it is believed that Heinrich MERTZ, Henry David MERTZ and Heinrich David MARTZ were the same person. There is a Henry Mertz who served as a private during the Revolutionary War in both Northampton County, and Berks County. Henry Mertz was taxed as a single male in Rockland Township, Berks County, in 1779. As stated earlier, Jacob Mertz his brother was also taxed in the same area in both years 1768 and 1769. It was Augusta Township, Northumberland County, that Heinrich David Martz moved his family in 1786, because his son Henry MARTZ stated that he was born in Northumberland County on the family farm there in 1786. Also Heinrich appeared on the tax rolls in 1788. A deed recorded at Northumberland County, Court house 18 July 1893 reveals that Heinrich David MARTZ, purchased from the Penn's on April 29, 1788 farm No. 2 in the Manor Pomfret for 191 pounds, 18 Shillings and 3 Pence. David's farm was adjacent to his brother Jacob MARTZ. It is believed that this farm is the second east of Sunbury on what is now known as Snydertown road. Jacob MARTZ purchased farm #3 in the Manor Pomfret on the same date as David. Historians frequently stated that David MARTZ and Jacob were brothers. That a close relationship existed is confirmed by the Last Will and Testament of john Jacob MARTZ filed 22 February 1803 in the Northumberland County, Court House. Jacob's Will was witnessed by "David MARTZ". The Last Will and Testament of Johannes Henry MARTZ does not mention a David MARTZ, however baptismal records for the family list a son Heinrich MARTZ born 20 July 1749. Since Heinrich MARTZ had a brother John George Heinrich MARTZ, born 5 November 1755, Heinrich MARTZ may have elected to use a given name such as David to avoid confusion with his father and brother who bore the same name. In David's Last Will and Testament, he mentions his wife Barbara, his children Peter, Henry George and grand daughter Rebecca Arter. Jacob MARTZ and Jacob MARTZ Jr. witnessed the will, but in his sons Will, David MARTZ Jr., of Germantown, Ohio, David Jr. mentions all of his brothers and sisters and his niece Rebecca Arter. This ties the family together. David Jr. also mentions other nieces and nephews and the Will becomes a valuable tool in reconstructing the family. David Sr. and his wife Barbara are believed to be buried in the "Old Cemetery" in Sunbury where descendants of his brother Jacob are buried. The 1790, 1800 and 1810 Census for Augusta Township, Northumberland indicate that at least six sons and two daughters were born to David MARTZ and Barbara MILLER. Utilizing his son David MARTZ Jr. of Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio Last Will and Testament as evidence. David Martz birth and death from his will Film 961022 Book 2 page 417 Northumberland, Pa. David MARTZ Jr. The son of David Martz and Barbara Miller David was born in Rockland Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania on 5 September 1784. He died 8 July 1851 in German Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. David is buried in the Germantown Cemetery, Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio. David's birth and death are recorded in the Germantown Cemetery records and also a book of German Township records of Cemeteries. (977.172 V39b. David moved with his parents to Augusta Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania about 1786 and the family settled there. David's father died about 1821 and soon after David Jr. moved to German Township, Montgomery County where about 1836 he and his brother, Peter purchased a parcel of land in Section two, Township three, Range four East, consisting of 202 acres of land. The deed is recorded in Bk W page 189 Film 966,654 and a copy of this indenture is included following this history. The most valuable evidence used to build the Martz family was David Jr's Last Will and Testament. It listed all of his brothers and sisters including those who had proceeded David in death. The Will included the children of these brothers and sisters. Some of those had passed away and it included the next generation also. One of them Rebecca (Arter) Shissler was also listed in David's father's Last Will and Testament as Rebecca the granddaughter. This then gave the progenitor to this family. There were several Power-of-Attorney's when the estate was probated, which helped build additional families. Copies of the above are included following this history. Copies of David and his father Will are included in the histories of each. David lived on the property that he purchased the remainder of his life. also Susannah (Martz) RICHTSTINE with her husband John RICHTSTINE lived with David from about 1844 until after his death in 1851 and then the Richtstine's purchased a tract of land in Jackson Township and moved to it. David was a fine farmer and was well thought of in the area. A copy of the chancery recorded included following the history and listed many of the brother and sisters and their children. Included are maps of Germantown and the land that Peter and David owned, also a tax list, which included Peter and David Martz. + 5 iv Abraham2 MARTZ [768], born 1785 in Longswamp Twp., Berks, Pa.. She married bef. 1801 in , Northumberland, Pa., Abraham ARTER [765], born 1 Oct 1775 in , Pa.; died 22 Feb 1855 in Augusta, Northumberland, Pa.; buried in St Peters Church, Cemetery, Northumberland, Pa., son of J. Jacob ARTER [5398] and Anna M. DIEHL [5384] . Notes for Maria Elizabeth MARTZ Maria Elizabeth MARTZ-764 Evidence of Maria is from her fathers Last Will and Testament written in 1820. He mentioned her in his Will as deceased and also her daughter Rebecca ARTER. I can calculate her birth to be about 1782. Elizabeth is also mentioned in her brother Davids will in 1851. David her brother stated "Rebecca ARTER the daughter of his sister Elizabeth ARTER, formerly MARTZ". In both wills she is referred to as Deceased. In Northumberland County, Pennsylvania Maria Elizabeth MARTZ married Abraham ARTER, date unknown. Abraham ARTER was born in Northumberland County, the first day of October 1775 and he died in Northumberland County, 22 February 1853. He is buried in the St Peters (Blue) Church Cemetery, Northumberland County. Elizabeth came to Northumberland County with her parents about 1786 and settled in the County, area along the Shomokin Creek. She married and died here and is probably buried in the St Peters Blue Church Cemetery but no marker has been found. Her daughter Rebecca married John Adam SHISSLER bur little is known of that family. John and Rebecca were living in Sunbury Northumberland County in 1853 but have not been recorded at any other place, at this time. Children of Maria Elizabeth MARTZ and Abraham ARTER were as follows: + 16 i Rebecca3 ARTER [766], born 1801 in , Northumberland, Pa.. She married John Adam SHISSLER [5383]. 5. Abraham2 MARTZ [768] (Heinrich David1), born 1785 in Longswamp Twp., Berks, Pa.; died 1848 in Wayne Twp., Butler, Ohio. He married in 1808 in , Northumberland, Pa., Mary J. REED [769], born 1791 in , Northumberland, Pa., daughter of Christopher REED [4982] . Notes for Abraham MARTZ Abraham MARTZ-768 Soon after Abraham and Mary married they removed to Madison township, Butler County, Ohio. Some say Abraham moved with his father-in-law but Christopher Purchased a parcel of land in Section 18 Madison Township on the 2nd of December 1807 which would indicate Christopher REED, Mary's father, moved earlier. A copy of that indenture is included following Abraham's history. This tract lying in Section 18, Township, 2, and Range 4 East. Abraham and Mary lived on this land and worked it while the country was wild and undeveloped. Here he went to work with a will to clear a farm and make a home, and was subjected to the many trials and difficulties incident to the life of a pioneer. He was a man of strong determination, and while yet a young man decided to make a start forward. His father in law gave him a free hand on this land and soon owned it. Upon this place is an old stone house built in 1815 by either Christopher or Abraham. When built it was considered quite an elegant residence, and was among the best buildings of that day. Abraham sold a parcel of land in section 4, Township 2, Range 4 on 8 April 1829, which he bought earlier for speculation. Children of Abraham MARTZ and Mary J. REED were as follows: + 17 i David3 MARTZ [410], born 15 Jun 1815 in Madison Twp., Butler, Ohio. He married Mary SNYDER [5082]. + 18 ii Sarah3 MARTZ [2204], born 1818 in Madison Twp., Butler, Ohio. She married John C. ECHART [4994]. 6. Henry2 MARTZ [770] (Heinrich David1), born 17 Oct 1786 in Shamokin Twp., Northumberland, Pa.; died Aug 1848 in Shamokin Twp., Northumberland, Pa.; buried in St Peter (Blue), Northumberland, Pa.. He married in 1813 in Shamokin Twp., Northumberland, Pa., Elizabeth FAGELY [771], born 16 Mar 1794 in Shamokin, Northumberland, Pa.; died 28 May 1870 in Shamokin Twp., Northumberland, Pa.. Notes for Henry MARTZ BURIED IN ST PETER BLUE CHURCH SHAMOKIN TWP. NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, PA. Batch #: 8712805, Sheet #: 53, Source Call #: 1396345 Henry was born Shomokin township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania on 17 October 1786. He was born on his fathers home stead along the Shamokin Creek near Sunbury, in Shamokin Township. Henry died in Shamokin Township, Northumberland County, in August 1848 and is buried in the St Peters (Blue) Church Cemetery. It is now in Ralpho Township. These dates are recorded in "Burials of Northumberland County", Pennsylvania. Pub. 1985 by Jas. A. Meiser. Henry is not recorded in the 1850 Census but his wife and some of his children are. Henry MARTZ married in Shamokin about 1812 to Elizabeth FAGELY who was born on 16 March 1794 the daughter of Christian and Magdalena FAGELY. She is also buried at the St Peters Church in Shamokin, but not along side her husband. Elizabeth died 28 May 1870. Henry was a farmer by occupation and practiced that profession all of his life. Children of Henry MARTZ and Elizabeth FAGELY were as follows: 19 i Catharine3 MARTZ [790], born 24 Jul 1814 in Shamokin Twp., Northumberland, Pa.; died 2 Mar 1888 in , Northumberland, Pa.; buried in St Peters Church, Cemetery, Northumberland, Pa.. 20 ii Hattie3 MARTZ [1167], born 1816 in Upper Augusta, Northumberland, Pa.. + 21 iii Solomon3 MARTZ [1152], born 22 Mar 1818 in Upper Augusta, Northumberland, Pa.. Susannah2 MARTZ [704] (Heinrich David1), born 21 Apr 1788 in Augusta, Northumberland, Pennsylvania; died 1874 in Brimfield, Peoria, Il.; buried in French Grove Cem, Peoria, Il.. She married on 11 Apr 1811 in , Northumberland, Pa., John RICHTSTINE (Sr.) [703], born 29 Aug 1790 in Longswamp Twp., Berks, Pennsylvania; died 29 Sep 1881 in Brimfield Twp, Peoria, Il.; buried 1 Oct 1881 in French Grove Cem, Peoria, Il., son of Jacob RICHTSTINE [705] and Maria Catherine KEISER [706] . Notes for Susannah MARTZ Susannah's father Heinrick David came from Longswamp Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, about 1786 and purchased a parcel of land along the Shamokin Creek not to far from the town of Sunbury. Susannah grew up here and in the month of April and the 11th day 1811 she married John RICHTSTINE. Susannah MARTZ died in Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Ill. and is buried in the French grove Cemetery in the year 1874. The progenitor of the RICHTSTINE family is Jacob RICHTSTINE of Germany. He wasborn in 1756 and came to the new world about 1775-6. and he died in 1816, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Jacob had six children and John was the youngest. Both Susannah and John were members of the German Reformed Church and followed this church all of their lives. John joined the church when he was 17 although he was baptized when an infant. Through John Richtstine's obituary we find that he was born 27 August 1790 in Longswamp Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. and that he died in Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Ill. on 29 September 1881. He is buried beside his wife in unmarked graves in the French Grove Cemetery, Millbrook Township, Peoria County, Ill. John and Susannah RICHTSTINE lived in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania from their marriage until 1836 for they are recorded in the 1820, 1830 Census of Northumberland County, and also in the Tax list. When Susannah's father David MARTZ Sr. died in 1822, John Richtstine purchased many items from the vendue or sale and also when Barbara, Susannah's mother died they also purchased items from the Estate and are recorded in that Estate. John was paid for some work done on the Estate. This was in 1835-6. In 1828, John and Susannah purchased a lot in the town of Northumberland on Water Street. This land was sold in 1836 but the deed was not recorded until 1838. Both John and Susannah's two oldest children, Henry and Elizabeth were married in Northumberland County. Henry removed to Cumberland County, and Elizabeth removed to Butler county, Ohio. It was about 1836 that John and Susannah Richtstine removed with the remainder of there children and went to Butler County, Ohio. It is believed by this compiler that the family first moved to Madison Township, Butler County, but at least by 1840 John and his family were living in Wayne Township, Butler County, Ohio. The family is recorded in the 1840 Census of Wayne Township. This is also where their daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Martz had removed. The reason I believe John and Susannah first went to Madison Township is because Susannah's brother Abraham Martz had moved there in 1808 and was well established so it seems likely that would be there first stop. Their next four children all married in Wayne Township, Butler County. They were John Jr. married Elizabeth GRAFT; Jacob married Amela HARTMAN; Hannah married John BOLYARD and Mary married David MOORE. This all happened from late 1839 to early 1842 and all are recorded in the Butler County Marriage Books. John Sr. and Susannah then removed to Montgomery County, Ohio about 1844. This move was to Susannah's brother David who was living in German Township, on a farm he had purchased in 1836. There children went to different areas. Some stayed in other townships in Butler County and others left Ohio for Iowa and Indiana. Margaret, John and Susannah's youngest daughter stayed with stayed with them and went to Montgomery County. David MARTZ was 60 years old when John and Susannah came to live with him and its a good possibility that he was not able to farm. In a letter John composed to his two sons in 1850 he refers to what he was growing and how much he sold the products for. This of course was David Martz's farm. So John Richtstine could have taken over the responsibility of the farm for David Martz. John was several years younger than David and John Richtstine lived to be over 91 years old. He must have been in much better physical condition the David. David died only 6 or 7 years after John and Susannah Richtstine arrived in German Township in about the year 1844. The fact that John and Susannah were living on David's farm is verified as recorded in the 1850 Census of German Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. David Martz never married so when he died he divided his estate between his brothers and sisters. On 13 August 1851 the Last Will and Testament of David Marta Jr. was recorded for probate and an item in that Will gave Susannah (Martz) Richtstine, 1,000.00 dollars to purchase a home. In March the 22nd day of 1853, Susannah purchased a 40 acre farm with a home in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. Located in Section 22 Range 4, and Township 4. John and Susannah sold this farm on 26 January 1855. After the sale and because his plans to buy land in Iowa near his son John Jr. fell apart because of his sons death in December 1850. John and Susannah decided to move near the daughter Elizabeth (Richtstine) Martz in Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Ill. John and Elizabeth Martz had moved there earlier and John and Susannah Richtstine purchased an 80 Acre farm next to John and Elizabeth Martz. John Richtstine built a home on this 80 acres and farmed this land from 1855 until his death in 1881. Although they gave this land by deed to their daughter Margaret, John still farmed it until his death. When they left Ohio Margaret had one illegitimate child that removed with them to Ill. Obituary of John Richtstine Given to me by Maynelle Fossnock Died, at his home four miles north of Elmwood, on Thursday, September 29,1881, Mr. John Richtstine, aged 91 yrs., 1 Month and 2 Days. The remains were interred at French Grove on Saturday, October 1st, Rev. J.E. Carson of Brimfield officiating. Grandfather Richtstine was born August 27th, 1791, in Berks County, Pa. For a number of years he lived in Sunbury, Pa. In 1835 he moved to Butler County, Ohio, and in 1855 to his last home in Peoria County, Ill. He was baptized in Infancy, and united with the German Reformed church at the age of 17. He lived true to his faith and belief as long as life lasted. His best friend and consoler was his bible, and he never retired to rest without repeating the ten commandments. His favorite book was a large bible that was printed in Germany about the year 1425, now 350 years old, and we trust it has pointed him safe to that haven of rest beyond the storms of time. He was married April 11th, 1811, to Susannah Martz. For 63 year they bore life's burdens together; in 1874 her mission on earth was ended, and she was called home, and now their bodies lie side by side asleep in death, quietly awaiting the resurrection He was the youngest of six children. Long life characterized the family, for their average ages years 83 1/2 years, or a total of 501 years. John lived to be the oldest. Notes for John RICHTSTINE (Sr.) !1850 Census German Twp. David MARTZ-410: David Martz received power-of-attorney from his cousin David Martz (the son of John MARTZ) when their uncle, David MARTZ from German Township, Montgomery County, Ohio Estate was probated. David MARTZ, who on section 18 of Madison Township, was among the older settlers of the county (1815) and has all his life been identified with its growth and development. His father was one of the heroes and patriots of former times, having fought in the War of 1812. Abraham, his father, a native of Longswamp Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, came to this township in 1807-8, from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania while the country was wild and undeveloped. Here his father went to work with a will to clear a farm and make a home, and was subjected to the many trials and difficulties incident to the life of a pioneer. The primitive log house, with its large open fire-place and home-made furnishings, was the characteristic dwelling of the times, and even these at the time of Abraham's settlement were few and far between. This land that Abraham settled on was first purchased by Abraham's father-in-law Christopher Reed, who came to Butler County at the same time Abraham did. After David's father, Abraham, David lived on this same land in Section 18. On the place is the old stone house built in 1815, still standing as a reminder of the days and deeds of former generations. When built it was considered quite an elegant residence, and was among the best buildings of that day. David was brought up on this farm and early in life became accustomed to the work incident to that occupation during those early days of the settlement. He was educated to work, and the habits of industry and economy there formed have followed him through life. He has been four times married: first to Mary SNYDER, a daughter of Samuel SNYDER and Catharine WEAVER. She died in 1870, having been the mother of eleven children. The second union was with Catherine WILLIAMSON, a widow, whose maiden name was SNYDER, and who was cousin of the first wife. She died after only seven months of wedded life, a victim of consumption, as was her cousin before her. The third wife was Elizabeth SHARTLE, a daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Lingle) Shartle. She was a woman of refinement and intelligence, possessing rare qualities of heart and mind which endeared her to all. She died about two years after the marriage, mourned by a wide circle of loving friends. His fourth wife was a sister of his first, from Douglas County, Ill. After only six months they separated so he lived out the remainder of his life single. Mr. MARTZ has been an intelligent farmer, and is well read in matters generally. He is a stanch Democrat and quite and influential man in his time in the party. He served six years on the Board of County Commissioners, and served twenty years continuously as Township Treasurer. He has been Rel- estate Appraiser for his township for thirty years, and had the confidence of the people generally. Religiously Mr. MARTZ is connected with the German Reformed Church, in which denomination he has been an Elder for nearly thirty years. Her family were subjected to the many trials and difficulties incident to the life of the pioneer. On 30 June 1836 in Madison Township, Butler County, Ohio, Sarah MARTZ married John C. ECKERT. John was born in Virginia, in the year 1812. Sarah and John lived in Madison Township, up to at least 1860 because they're are in the 1860 Census of Butler County. Notes for Solomon MARTZ Solomon MARTZ-1152. When seven years old he went to live with his uncle, Solomon FAGELY, in Shamokin Township, remaining with him until he was eighteen years old. He then entered the employ of his uncles Amos, George and Nathan FAGELY, who had a store at Mauch Chunk, clerking there sixteen months. Returning to Samokin he engaged with William and Reuben FAGELY in a similar capacity, continuing for a year, after which he went to Mount Caramel to work for Solomon FAGELY, who kept a tavern there. He remained with him a year. At that time a stage line was started between Mount Caramel and Shamokin, and he was appointed driver and mail carrier, working as such for a few months. He then took the same position on the stage line between Pottsville and Northumberland, for one year, and he was the last survivor of those connected with this method transportation in central Pennsylvania at that time. Returning to Shamokin, he was elected supervisor of Coal Township, having charge of the roads from Mount Caramel to Trevorton, and filled that office two years. During the next seven years he was engaged in hauling coal over the railroad from Shamokin to Sunbury for William and Reuben FAGELY, under Contract, at the end of that time settling on the farm of Reed's station where he passed the remainder of his days. He died October 4, 1894, aged seventy-seven years, and is buried at Reed's Church. Mr. Martz was always interested in the welfare of the community, and the success of those enterprises that affected all its members. His generosity to those less fortunate than himself, his benevolence to all philanthropy movements, his sympathy with all who needed it, were as much the cause of the esteem he enjoyed as his industrious and successful career. He and his family attended the German Reformed Church, and when St. Jacob's was rebuilt, in 1870, he contributed all the brick necessary, one hundred thousand, his children giving the money to erect the steeple, $1,200. In politics he was a stanch Republican and greatly interested in the success of the party, though he never had any political aspirations for himself. He was overseer of the poor for one year after settling in Shamokin Township. On April 6, 1841 Solomon MARTZ married Hannah REED, who was born on the 25th day of December 1814 and she died December 1895, aged eighty years, daughter of John and Eva (HOWARD) REED, of Shamokin Township and to this union where born seven children. Martz-2215 spent most of his early days on the farm and when eighteen years old went to Mauch Chunk, where he became a clerk in the store of his uncles, Nathan and George FAGELY. After eight year in their employ he formed a partnership with Robert Kootz, under the firm name of Martz and Klotz, and they carried on a general store for some time, until Mr. Klotz's enlistment in a military company; he served as a Lieutenant in the Mexican war. During the period of that war Mr. Martz sold out to a Mr. Lowery and went into the butchering business, in which he continued for two years. In 1851 he come to Sunbury, where he has since made his home. Here he was first associated with his uncles William and Reuben FAGELY, who shipped considerable coal at that time, remaining with them until the completion of the Northern Central railroad, in 1856, at which time he became the first baggage master for that road, at Sunbury. He held the position continuously for thirty-five years, until his retirement, and was undoubtedly on of the most familiar figures in this section of Northumberland county. Mr. Martz has always been popular with his fellow citizens, who have shown him many evidences of their esteem. A social organization of the town has been named the Nathan F. MARTZ Club in his honor. Though he has passed the ninetieth anniversary of his birth he is remarkably well preserved and reads the newspapers assiduously without glasses, retaining his interest in local and national events and in everyday affairs of all kinds. Tall and of massive build, he has been blessed with a fine physique, and he was very active for one of his years, He spoke both English and German. In 1842 Mr. Martz became a member of "Old 76 lodge, at Mauch Chunk, of the I.O. O.F. His first Presidential vote was cast for James K. Polk, but he left the Democratic party when Polk took his stand on the tariff question and has been a Republican since the formation of the party. He has held local offices, having served four years as overseer of the poor, and was a member of the town council for several years. He was a member of the Reformed Church for seventy six years, having joined when he was a boy of fifteen. He first be came a member of the Blue Church in Ralpho township, and later was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sunbury, in which he and all his family have been active workers. Mr. Martz lived on Market street for many years, but since 1885 has made his home at the corner of Fourth street and Woodlawn avenue. Children of Nathan F. MARTZ and Eliza A. (Henry's age is calculated from the 1850 and 1860 Census of Shippensburg Township, Cumberland County, Pa.) Soon after he was of age his grandmother Barbara (MILLER) MARTZ died and he purchased some of the items of her and her husbands Estate. (Public Vendue for Henry's grand-mother, Barbara MARTZ estate 30 October 1831). Henry removed after the above Estate was settled or at least before 1841. He moved to Shippensburg Cumberland County, Pa. On 6 March 1834 in Northumberland County, Henry RICHTSTINE married Catharine MARTZ. (a distant cousin) Catharine is the daughter of David MARTZ and Magdalina SHISSLER. She was born on 2 September 1809 in Northumberland County, Pa., and she died in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pa on 7 April 1881. (this is recorded in the Shippensburg German Reformed Church and on film 1,486,703 found in the LDSFHL). By the year 1841 Henry and Catharine had removed to Shippensburg Township, Cumberland County, Pa. Henry is on record being of that county when he purchased a parcel of land with houses in Book XX Volume 1 page 96. This lot had a log cabin and also a kitchen built on it. Henry purchased the property through a Sheriff's sale. Henry and Catharine had six children. The oldest, George, must have died young. I have not discovered any further record of George, only the 1850 Census. He was not chosen to take the Administration of his father's estate which would indicate that he was living too far away or he had passed away. Henry's daughters, Susan, Mary and Abby never married and lived together on the lot Henry purchased in 1841. The original buildings I am sure were replaced in later years. The three daughter's address was on Sinica Street where they lived the remainder of their lives. Their daughter, Margaret (RICHTSTINE) FRIESE married Michael FRIESE and had six children, of those only two survived to become adults in the rugged life of that day. Margaret was made a widow in 1880, and her two children who survived moved to live with her brother Frank, who was living in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pa. Franklin the youngest in the family left home when under 20 and became a Physician. By 1880 Frank had moved to Northumberland County. Henry was a merchant in Shippensburg and was listed that way until his death in 1869. His estate was probated 17 December 1869. Children of George T. Notes for Elizabeth RICHTSTINE Elizabeth Richtstine-722. Elizabeth and John were both reared in Northumberland County, Pa., and left there after their first child was born in 1834 and before 1837 when their second child was born. They probably followed Elizabeth's parents John and Susannah RICHTSTINE who in 1836 removed to Wayne Township, Butler County, Ohio. They lived and farmed in Wayne Township, until after 1850 because they are recorded in the 1850 Census of Wayne Township. Then before 1860 John and Elizabeth removed to Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Il., and they are recorded there in the 1860 Census of that County. Also Elizabeth's parents came to Peoria County, about 1855. (John and Susannah RICHTSTINE had moved to Montgomery County, Ohio and lived there until 1855 and from Montgomery County, moved to Peoria, Il. They were living next to John and Elizabeth MARTZ on Section 20 Brimfield Township in the 1860 Census.) John and Elizabeth purchased a farm in Brimfield Township, and became substantially wealthy. From here his children grew to adults, those who married, married there. John and Elizabeth owned 160 acres in Section 20 of good farm land and all adjoining, and some timberland in Section 6. This is recorded in John's probate papers when he died 28 July 1885. Children of Elizabeth RICHTSTINE and John MARTZ were as follows: 95 i Charles4 MARTZ [2414], born Jan 1834 in Augusta, Northumberland, Pa.. Charles MARTZ4 the son of Elizabeth RICHTSTINE3 (John RICHTSTINE Sr.2; Jacob RICHTSTINE1) and John MARTZ. Born in Northumberland County, Pa., in January 1835, the first child of John and Elizabeth. He removed from Pa., with his parents in 1836 to Wayne Township, Butler County, Ohio. He lived there until about 1853 because he is recorded in the Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Ill. Atlas as arriving in that year (1853), Section 20, but still in Butler County, Ohio in the 1850 Census. By 1860, Charles father purchased two 80 acre parcels there in Section 20. In the year 1860 probably in Brimfield Mary Margaret GRAFT married Charles MARTZ . The daughter of John Pottinger GRAFT and Mary GRAY. By 1864 Charles and his wife removed to Jones County, Iowa, for their daughter was born in Jones County, in 1864. Why they picked Jones County is a guess but Mary's parents lived there and also her sister Elizabeth Ann RICHTSTINE the wife of John Jr. lived there. Elizabeth's husband John RICHTSTINE had died before 1864 and she had remarried Adam KRAMER. There were also other members of the RICHTSTINE and GRAFT families living in Jones County, Charles and Mary's second child, Willis, was born in Jones County also in the year 1867. It was about the turn of the Century that Charles moved from Jones County, and that was to Mt. Vernon, Franklin Township, Linn County, Iowa. They were still living in Mt Vernon in 1910 for they are recorded there in the 1910 Census. Charles made at least one trip back to Peoria County, Ill., because his father died in 1885 and the Estate was probated. Charles was very much involved in that probate. His father's Estate was valued at 15,000. how it was divided is not known for it was not recorded in the probate. He also could have gone back to Peoria County, when his mother passed away. At the present time (1990) there is nothing recorded of Charles and Mary Dyeing, although Charles was 75 years old and Mary was 72 as recorded in the 1910 Census of Franklin Township, Linn County. Notes for John RICHTSTINE (Jr.) John Richtstine-595. John purchased 40 acres of land 10 October 1842, this must be where they moved to in 1843. This parcel was near Morley in Jones County, and is located on the south west quarter of the south east quarter of Section 19, Township 83 north range 3 west. John also purchased by Patent all of the north east quarter of Section 19. This gave him 240 acres of land purchased from 10 October 1843 to 1 June 1849. Early in 1850 John with his family moved to Marion Township Linn County, Iowa and lived near the St Julian Post Office. (this is verified in a statement made by James Oscar RICHTSTINE, John's grand-son they lived in Marion Township). The 1850 Census for Linn County, also puts John and his family in Linn County, John's occupation was carpentry. John and his family lived in Linn County until at lease December 1850 because on 18 December 1850 and in Marion Township, John died a very young man. His will which was written 10 December 1850 left all his real estate and personal property to his wife Elizabeth. His wife, along with Jacob RICHTSTINE his brother and David GRAFT his brother-in-law he made the executor's of his Estate. John RICHTSTINE is buried in the Green Center Cemetery, near Morley, Jones County, Iowa. Elizabeth sold part of the 240 acres after his death. She retained the 40 acres situated on the north east quarter of the north east quarter of Section 19, where the house was. (my wife May and I visited this site and the basement of the house is all that is visible now. It states in the Obituary of Elizabeth's, that she moved to a farm near Morley from Ohio and lived there the rest of her life. She probably meant except the year they lived in Marion Township, Linn County, Iowa. Another discrepancy to the statement in the obituary, Landora Jane RICHTSTINE (one of John and Elizabeth's daughters said she was born in Olin Jones County, Iowa. This is about 6 or 7 miles from the farm. Does that mean they were living there or they just took Elizabeth there to have the baby. That distance in a wagon would be quite a stretch in 1849. When John died he left with his wife, four helpless children to raise. Elizabeth only 27 year old at the time faced the emergency without a murmur. She was born 22 May 1823 in Butler County, Ohio and died October 16, 1902 and is buried in Center Cemetery near Morley, Iowa. She was a member of the M.E. Church and was one of its most faithful workers. OBITUARYElizabeth GRAFT was born in Butler County, Ohio, May 22, 1823, and died at her home near Morley, Jones County, Iowa. aged 79 years 4 months 25 days. She was married to John RICHTSTINE Jr., December 17, 1839 in Butler County, Ohio. In 1843, they moved to Iowa, and located on the farm where she spent he life. Four children were born to them. J.G. RICHTSTINE, Mary FARNHAM, Margaret BYERLY and Landora TALLMAN, all of whom are still living. Her husband departed this life December 18, 1850, leaving her with four helpless children. She faced the emergency without a murmur. In 1854, she was married to Adam Kramar, of Jones County, who still lives here. To them were born four children J. W. KRAMAR, David Kramar, Etta Gaul and Alona, all of who are living excepting Alona, who died in infancy. The sons and daughters have all had families, so there are numbered forty- four grandchildren and forty-one great grandchildren to this worthy couple. Six only of the grandchildren and six of the great grandchildren have died. As to the religious views of the subject of this sketch, her neighbors would be good witnesses. She had been a faithful worker in the M.E. Church for the past sixty-two years. She started with $50.00, the subscription, which made possible the erection of the church from which she borne to her burial. She held her membership at the Walnut Grove Church. Her living children are all thankful for the religious training given them by a loving mother. The funeral services were held at the Morley M.E. Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev I. E. Wilcox, assisted by the Rev. Nathan Potter, a life long friend of the family. There sermon, founded upon the words blessed are the dead which die in the lord from hence-forth. Was a clear unfolding of scripture teaching concerning the immortality of the soul and immortality of blessedness to them who through faith in the lord Jesus Christ, shall be found in him at the great day, and immortality of non- blessedness to them who refuse to respond to the love of God as recalled in the life of His Son, that whosoever liveth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. A short address by Elder Potter was loving tribute to the memory of the deceased, and freighted with word of comfort to the bereaved. A vast congregation far beyond the capacity of the church had assembled to drop their tear of sorrow and sympathy and to look once more on the face of one who, like Abraham, was the friend of God, and also everyone's friend. The body was laid to rest in the beautiful little cemetery beside U.B. Church at Center, from which it shall respond to God's call and come forth to a glorious resurrection. On 15 May 1854 Elizabeth married Adam KRAMER, of Jones County. In time he repurchased most of the land that was the original 240 acres of John and Elizabeth's farm Jacob RICHTSTINE, John and Elizabeth's oldest son moved to Indiana when a boy to visit his relative the Gray family. Where he probably stayed until he married. Also Mary C. was living with the John P. Graft family (Her Grand-father). So its possible that there was conflict with the children from the two families. In about 1864 and in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana Jacob Gray RICHTSTINE married Frances R. GRAY. Frances was born 23 May 1846 and she died 16 august 1923 in Iowa. Jacob was born in Butler County, Ohio and about 1843 his parents removed their family to Jones County, Iowa. His father purchased several hundred acres of land in Jones County and built a home, but about 1849 or 1850 they moved to Marion Township, Linn County, Iowa. In December 1850 Jacob's father died and they returned to Jones County. His mother started selling off the farm leaving only about 40 acres around their home. In 1854 his mother remarried to Adam KRAMER. Soon after this Jacob moved to Indiana. Also two of his sisters left home too. At first I thought Jacob went to Tippecanoe County, In. to his Aunt Hannah BOLYARD, born RICHTSTINE. Jacob was living with the John S. GRAY family in Wayne Township, Montgomery County, Indiana, as recorded in the 1860 Census. Elizabeth Ann (GRAFT) RICHTSTINE, Jacob's mother was related to the GRAY family through her mother, Mary GRAY, although I don't know if that is why Jacob ended up at the John S. GRAY family. Nor do I know if John S. GRAY is any relation to Elizabeth's mother Mary (Gray) GRAFT. The Civil War broke out and Jacob enlisted in Company G seventy- second regiment, Indiana volunteer infantry. He took part in many hotly contested engagements and was wounded at the battle of Lookout Mountain. At the close of the war he located in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana. Jacob resided here until 1879, when he came west to Iowa, settling in Jones County, Iowa, he purchased a farm in Rome Township on which he resided until after 1880. She is buried in Harlan Shelby County, Iowa beside her husband, James Henry TALLMAN. On 31 December 1869 in Jones County, Iowa, Landora Jane RICHTSTINE married James Henry TALLMAN. Landora married second to Thomas A. LONG on 14 October 1908. Landora's mother Elizabeth Ann GRAFT, was left with four young children when John RICHTSTINE Jr. died in Linn County, Iowa probably Marion Township, while working as a carpenter. They owned a farm in Jones County, Iowa and the family returned there. Landora's mother sold all of the farm of over 200 acres except 40 acres where the house was, obviously because she couldn't raise four children and run a large farm alone. When Landora was only 5 years old her mother Elizabeth (GRAFT) RICHTSTINE married second to Adam KRAMER. So she was raised mostly by the step-father and her mother. She had one brother and two sisters that left home soon after their mothers remarriage and step-brothers and sisters came to live in the home. Both James H. She married on 2 Apr 1839 in Wayne, Butler, Ohio, John BOLYARD [731], born 6 Jan 1803 in , Northumberland, Pa.; died 26 Apr 1894 in Perry Twp., Tippecanoe, Indiana. Notes for Hannah RICHTSTINE Hannah Richtstine-724. Hannah was 17 when her parents removed from Northumberland County, Pa. to Butler County, Ohio. After she married John BOLYARD, four of their children were born in Butler County, then about 1847 they moved to Iowa probably Jones County, for a very short time, then on to Perry Township Tippecanoe County, Indiana and took up land on the South East Quarter of Section 36. John and Hannah arrived here no later than late 1849 or early 1850. The tax list put John Bolyard in Perry Township from 1850 until at least 1880. Also the 1850 Census of Tippecanoe County, page 148 line 21, places the Bolyards in Tippecanoe County. John and Hannah purchased a parcel of land in Perry Township Section 36 as above mentiond, about 151 acres and that same farm is still in the family to day. (1991) In a letter written to John RICHTSTINE Jr. from his father John RICHTSTINE Sr. it states that John BOLYARD has a very valuable farm. This letter was written 22 September 1850. The tax list also records John BOLYARD'S son David in 1862 on this farm but the next year he had gone. David is recorded in the 1880 Census in Madison Township, Clinton County, Indiana so that's where David probably went. Then in 1872 the same Tax list recorded John BOLYARD Jr. on this same farm as his father. Then both father and son were recorded on this farm up to 1880. Notes for Mary RICHTSTINE Mary Richtatine-725. Mary at the age of 16 or 17 years of age professed her faith in her savior and became a communicant in the German Reformed or German Presbyterian Church. Then David and Mary united with the French Grove Presbyterian Church in February 1877. David was one of its ruling elders until his death, and Mary continued to the end one of its faithful members. David MOORE was born in Lehigh County, Pa. on 25 March 1816. When only two years old his parents moved to Butler County, Ohio. There he grew to manhood and learned the carpenter trade. After their marriage the couple lived in both Wayne and St Clair Township's until 1860 when they made their final move to Peoria County, Il, arriving there in March 14. They soon settled in the French Grove neighborhood, where their home was for the remainder of their lives. David had borrowed some money from his brother-in-law John Martz, probably to purchase land. This is recorded in the probate papers of John MARTZ when his Estate was settled in 1885. Their farm was 153 acres of land on Section 32, Millbrook Township, Peoria County, Il. Their son George Martz MOORE having enlisted in the army in 1862 Mrs MOORE became deeply interested in work for the soldiers. She faithfully attended all the meetings held from house to house by the ladies of her neighborhood to make garments and do other work for the boys in blue as long as the civil war lasted. On account of her skill and industry the cutting of the garments was turned over to her. On Sunday after noon the 3rd of January 1892 David MOORE died and was buried Tuesday at the French Grove Cemetery. Mr. Moore was about 77 years of age and had lived in the area for over 30 years. Mary (RICHTSTINE) MOORE was taken with lung fever March 25, 1903 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary E. MARTZ, where she died at 5 PM, 29 March 1903 and whence her remains, after a hymn and prayer, were taken to the French Grove Church Wednesday, April 1, 1903. Funeral Services were conducted there at 1 O'clock in the afternoon and she was put to rest along side her husband at French Grove Cemetery. Witness my hand, This 31 day of March 1903 (Signature) J.F. Cooper Address Elmwood Ills. OBITUARY Mary (RICHTSTINE) MOORE March 29, 1903. It was a notable pioneer who passed away when Mrs. Mary Moore died in Elmwood Illinois last Sunday afternoon. Mary Richtstine was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, April 30, 1821. Of the family to which she belonged only one remains, her sister, Margaret Richtstine. She came with her family by wagon from the Pennsylvania home to Butler County, Ohio, arriving in December, 1836. They came by way of Altoona over the summit of the Allegheny mountains, and further along struck the famous National Road upon which work was going on. She was married to David Moore January 31, 1840. He died January 3, 1892. So their married life had lasted nearly 52 years. Of their five children, one died in infancy. The living are George M., Mrs. Mary E. Martz, Jacob H., and Mrs. Susan A. Gooding. There are seventeen grand-children. Mr. and Mrs. Moore removed to Illinois in 1860, arriving in Elmwood Ill. March 14. They settled soon after in the French Grove neighborhood, where was their home ever after. Their son George having enlisted in the army in 1862 Mrs. Moore became deeply interested in work for the soldiers. She faithfully attended all the meetings held from house to house by the ladies of her neighborhood to make garments and do other work for the boys in blue as long as the Civil War lasted. On account of her skill and industry the cutting of the garments was turned over to her. Perhaps it will never be known to how great an extent the success of the Union armies was due to such devoted patriotic women. While spending a part of last winter with her son George and his family in Peoria, Mrs. Moore was received with great honor and reverence as an honorary member of the George A. Wilson Grand Army Circle of that city. It was as a mother of a soldier that she was entitled to this distinction. At 16 or 17 years of age Mrs. Moore professed her faith in her Savior and became a communicant in the German Reformed or German Presbyterian church of Germantown, Ohio. She and her husband united with the French Grove Presbyterian church in February 1877. He was one of its ruling elders until his death, and she continued to the end one of its faithful members. The different pastors found her always a true friend and helper. Though quiet and unassuming, she nobly bore her part in the work of the church. Mrs. Moore was of German descent and could read both German and English. Her grandfather, a finely educated man, escaped from Germany to avoid military service, which he regarded as a tyrannical imposition. He was eighteen months on the ocean in a sailing vessel which it was once feared would never reach land. On arriving he was sold for a term of years to the highest bidder to pay the expense of this long passage. It was very interesting to hear from Mrs. Moore the events of days long past which were very firmly held by her fine memory. "At the some time she had a clear grasp of things that happened in later years, which is not common with people so old. She was taken with lung fever March 25 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Martz, where she died March 29, and whence her remains, after a hymn and prayer, were taken to the French Grove church Wednesday, April 1. Funeral services were conducted there at 1 O'clock in the afternoon by Rev. J.W. Keller and Rev. B.Y. George, and the mortal part of this good old woman was laid to rest in the French Grove cemetery. David MOORE The passing on January 3, 1892 of an aged and highly respected citizen of French Grove, died Sunday afternoon and was buried Tuesday at the French Grove Cemetery. Mr. Moore was about 77 years of age and was one of the early settlers of this county. His wife survives him. A comment recorded on the back of one of Mary RICHTSTINE's pictures. "She was spoken of as a very grand person by many people. She not only did a good job of raising her own family but always had several boys who were learning the Carpenter trade from her husband. She cooked, sewed, washed for and cared well for all of them. She was the wife of a fine man David MOORE. We cannot eulogize on her enough, her character and reputation were of the highest". Notes for David MOORE !Records of Eleanor (Moore) Lowe Indianapolas, Indiana. She married unknown. Notes for Margaret RICHTSTINE Margaret Richtstine-725. Margaret had 2 illegitimate sons. Lived with her father and mother all her life. From land records will probate papers Death certificate and many other documents from 1855 until her death she lived in Brimfield Twp., Peoria County, Ill. Obituary from Elmwood City paper. The year of birth is verified on the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 Census of the area she lived at the time. She died in Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Il. on the 8th day of May in the year 1917. This date is also recorded on the death certificate. Margaret is buried in the French Grove Cemetery, across the road from the Church she went to for so many years. Margaret's grave marker does not have the correct date of birth or death. The reason for that error is that the grand daughter placed the marker there at least 45 years after her death. Mona her grand-daughter probably did not know the correct dates. The RICHTSTINE family lived in Augusta Township for several years but Margaret's father purchased a house in Northumberland borough along with the John Snyder family and they moved there. There were several houses on this lot so there was room for the two families. Margaret was the youngest child in the RICHTSTINE family and by the early 1830's, Henry and Elizabeth the two oldest brother and sister, married their individual partners and moved away. About 1836 when she was eleven her father and mother with the rest of the family moved to Wayne Township, Butler County, Ohio. Margaret and her parents remained in Butler County, until about 1844 and then removed to Montgomery County, Ohio, which was only a few miles. The remainder of her brother's and sister's had married in Butler County, and had moved west. John Jr. and Jacob to Jones County, Iowa, Hannah to Tippecanoe County, In. and Mary to St Clare Township, Butler Co. Ohio. In Montgomery County, the RICHTSTINE family lived with Susannah's brother David MARTZ. David had a large home and he never married so John and Susannah moved in with David. The RICHTSTINE'S resided here until David MARTZ died in 1851. From money received from the David MARTZ estate John and Susannah purchased a farm in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio in 1853 and they sold this farm in 1855 and removed to Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Il., where Elizabeth their daughter had move that same year. Susannah (MARTZ) RICHTSTINE purchased 80 acres next to John and Elizabeth in Section 20, Brimfield Township. John RICHTSTINE proceeded to build a new house on this land. Margaret came with them and brought her oldest son who was born in Montgomery County, Ohio. The second son was born in Peoria County. I am not sure if the children have the same father. Both Margaret's children are recorded in the 1860 Census of Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Il. By this time John and Elizabeth MARTZ had purchased an 160 Acre farm also on Section twenty next to the RICHTSTINE farm. Then a few years later her sister Mary (RICHTSTINE) MOORE and her husband David came to Peoria and purchased land in Millbrook Township, Peoria County, Margaret's father John was a carpenter by trade and built a home on the 80 acre farm which still stands and is being lived in (1988). Several generation of the RICHTSTINE's lived here until about 1980. Margaret's mother died in 1874 and her father died in 1881, both in Brimfield Township. There graves are without markers but in John RICHTSTINE's obituary it is stated that both Susannah and John are buried in French Grove Cemetery. Margaret's mother, Susannah (MARTZ) RICHTSTINE, sold the 80 acres to Margaret on 19 June 1866, but both parents lived on the farm the remainder of their lives. The land was in Margaret's name until her death in 1917 when the land was divided between her two sons David and Jacob RICHTSTINE. This was done when the Estate was divided. David must have purchased Jacob's half because David transferred the 80 acres (except a small parcel where the house is) to his son John RICHTSTINE. Then John's daughter's (Mona RICHTSTINE) as she was owner in 1980. Margaret RICHTSTINE had two children but all evidence indicates that she was never married and the children were illegitimate. She was well thought of in the community and was called Aunt Peg RICHTSTINE. The one child came with her when she moved from Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. The second child was born in Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Il. She gave the children her maiden name of RICHTSTINE which they later modified like most of the RICHTSTINE to RISTINE. On Margaret's death certificate her name is RICHTSTINE and the Certificate states that her fathers name is RICHTSTINE. Her last resting place is the French Grove Cemetery across from the Church (has been torn down) and next to her sister Mary (RICHTSTINE) MOORE. From the Elmwood Newspaper. "One of the oldest residents of this section entered into rest with the passing of Mrs. Margaret RICHTSTINE, who passed away yesterday in the ninety second year of her age. Within the last few months she has been about as was her usual wont, driving around alone with her old family horse on her various errands, but the past winter she has been kept confined to the house, staying with her son Jacob, at his place north of town, and where she was at the time of her death. Mrs Richtstine was born in Pennsylvania and came with her parents to this country when it was yet young and unsettled, and had spent the remainder of her days in this neighborhood. She is survived by her two sons, David and Jacob, and grandson and great grand daughter, who are left to mourn the passing of an affectionate mother. Funeral services will be held from her old church at French Grove tomorrow afternoon, conducted by Rev. B.Y. George, and the body laid to rest in the cemetery there, in whose neighborhood she had lived so long". Peter's father was an early pioneer to German Township, coming to Montgomery County about 1836, joining with his brother David MARTZ in purchasing a 200 acre farm near Germantown. Alva's father died just before Alva was born and he was under guardianship until he was of age. Soon after Alva married he removed to Preble County, Ohio because he is recorded in the 1880 Census there.(Footnote ) Alva's death certificate indicates his occupation was a Painter. Also Alva had a Cigar Store in which he sold his favorite dubbed "Grandpa's Favorites. How long Alva and his family lived in Preble County, Ohio is not known but his last three children were probably born in Preble County. From Preble County, Alva and his family moved back to Montgomery County, Ohio because there oldest daughter Daisy Perditta MARTZ married there in September 1894 so before 1894 Alva resettled in Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio.
