At the age of fifteen, he enlisted in Company A, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was honorably discharged in 1864. When seventeen, he began an apprenticeship to carpentering, attending school during the winter for four seasons, thus acquiring a knowledge of the common branches. At the age of twenty-one, he became a partner with his brother Samuel in the manufacture of wagons. In 1872, he opened a wagon shop in Howard County, which he conducted eight months, after which he took up farming. In 1877, he purchased a half interest in the wagon manufactory of Samuel Barrow, the firm being known as S. Barrow & Bro. Later, he became a member of the firm of Barrow Bros. He is well versed in music, which he has taught, both vocal and instrumental. Mr. Barrow is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and an active worker in the Sabbath school; also a member of the I. O. O. F.; he is a Republican and a temperance man.
