His parents, Henry and Catherine Hartman, in 1827 located in Wayne County, Ind., where Emanuel was reared. He engaged in farming, and continued until 1850, when he came to Tipton County. He rented a farm for three years; at the end of that time, he bought and moved upon his present farm of eighty acres in Section 29, Cicero Township. He has forty-five acres under cultivation, and the remainder in wood pasture. He has been twice married- the first time in Wayne County, in 1840, to Miss Lucy Russell, and in 1871 he married Libby White, of Tipton County. He has one child- Catherine.
