His father, George McColley, in a very early day came to Fayette County, Ind., and three years later located in Madison County, where he remained five years. He then removed to Marion County, and resided in Perry Township about forty years. He was a shoe-maker by trade, but resided on his farm and there worked at his trade. He died about 1873, at the age of eighty-three. The subject of this sketch served an apprenticeship at the carpenter's trade, and followed this business about ten years in Rush and Shelby Counties. In 1843, he began farming in Shelby County, where he remained until 1870, when he removed to Marion County, Ind. There he remained until 1875, when he came to Tipton County, locating in Cicero Township. Mr. McColley was married, February 19, 1844, in Shelby County, Ind., to Miss Caroline McMahon. They have three children living-Jesse, Cynthia Ann Casey and Nicholas M. Mr. McColley is a prominent farmer, and politically is identified with the Republican party.
