He was reared on a farm, and received but a limited education. About the year 1833, he went to a brother's, near New Castle, Ind. In the spring of 1834, he located near Economy, Wayne County; the following fall he was married to Miss Margaret Lee, of Wayne County, after which he engaged in farming on his father-in-law's place for three years. He then rented a farm near Economy, and two years later purchased eighty acres in Randolph County, Ind., and there his wife died, February 15, 1842, leaving two small children-Sarah R. and Henry H. (both deceased). The last named enlisted in the spring of 1864, in Company C, Fortieth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and died from exposure in April, 1865. In 1849, Mr. Pickering came to this county and entered 160 acres, built a log cabin, and began to cut away the forest. Mr. Pickering attended the first election in Wild Cat Township, and in its early history served five years as Justice of the Peace, and three years as County Commissioner, during which time the present court house was erected. September 15, 1843, he married Miss Rhoda Moore, of Miami County, Ohio. She was born June 21, 1814, and is the daughter of Samuel and Alice Moore, natives of Tennessee, and of English descent. They have had four children-Ezra L., Mary J. (deceased), Miles D. and Margaret A. Mr. Pickering is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and his wife belongs to the Society of Friends.
