PORTER, Auditor of Tipton County, was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, July 18, 1848. While he was yet young, his parents removed to Darke County, Ohio, where he was reared. During his youth, he learned the silversmith trade, and has followed that occupation with but a few intermissions ever since. On the breaking-out of the late rebellion, he enlisted in Company E, Fifth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. In 1867, Mr. Porter located in Tipton in the silversmith and jeweler's business, in which he engaged until his election as County Auditor in November, 1882. He has been four times elected Clerk of the Town of Tipton, which office he held for a period of four years; he was married in Howard County, June 8, 1872, to Miss Ella Raines.
