THOMAS, Justice of the Peace, is a native of Wayne County, Ind., and is the son of Jesse and Nancy Thomas. When James P. was ten years of age, his father died, and he lived on a farm with his uncle. In 1850, he came with his mother to Tipton County, and the following year taught one term of school in this county. He then returned to Wayne County, and worked on a farm until August, 1855, when he returned to Tipton County and engaged in teaching and farming twelve successive years. He purchased forty acres of land, and met with good success in collecting property. Mr. Thomas enlisted February 28, 1862, in Company K, Forty-seventh Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the battle at Riddle's Point and the siege of Fort Thompson. He served about nine months, when he was discharged and returned home. He then engaged in agricultural pursuits two years, when he sold his farm, came to Tipton County, and embarked in the grocery business, where he remained fifteen years, when he sold out. He is in comfortable circumstances, and owns a good residence in town. Mr. Thomas was married, August 15, 1855, in Wayne County, Ind., to Miss Elizabeth J. Lewis. They have a family of five children-Martha A., Lewis J., Sheridan, Mary and David V. Mr. Thomas was elected Justice of the Peace in November, 1878, and was re-elected in 1882.
