He was reared in Henry County, Ind., where he attended the common schools. He worked by the month at the carpenter's trade, and subsequently took up contracting and building. In the spring of 1850, he removed to Tipton County and has since made this his home, except two years spent in Fulton County. He owns a farm of seventy-nine acres in Cicero Township, on which he moved in 1857. He has since resided on this and has about sixty acres under cultivation. Mr. Van Buskirk was married, December 16, 1841, in Henry County, Ind., to Miss Rebecca Paul. They have had nine children-Mary E., Sarah A., Amanda, Samuel, Emeretta, Helen D., Robert M., Thomas Benton (deceased) and George W. (deceased). Joseph Van Buskirk, the father of our subject, was born in Kentucky in 1794, and came to Indiana about 1815; he was a blacksmith and pursued his trade for some time, and subsequently engaged in farming; he was married in Wayne County, Ind., in 1816, to Miss Mollie Huff; he located in Tipton County about 1844, and here resided until his death, which occurred in June, 1866.
