He is a native of Harrison County, Ky., and was born October 18, 1836, and is the son of John Winans. He spent his boyhood days in Scott County, Ky., and engaged in the distillery business. In 1859, he came to Indianapolis and began butchering for some time, and in 1865 enlisted in the United States service in Company I, One Hundred and Fifty-fourth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served about six months. He then returned to Indianapolis and worked in a saw mill, and in the fall of 1865 came to Tipton County, where he worked in a saw mill for some time. He then engaged in farming, which occupation he has since continued. In November, 1882, he purchased sixty acres in Section 30, where he still lives. He was married in this county, April 4, 1867, to Miss Caroline M. Clark. They have two children, Oscar C. and Laura J. Mr. Winans is a Democrat in politics, is an Odd Fellow and a member of the G. A.
