On the 27th day of March, 1844, William Harrington was commissioned Sheriff by Gov. Whitcomb, and empowered to order an election of the necessary officers to organize the new county of Tipton. The 27th of May, 1844, was accordingly selected as the day upon which the first election in the county should be held. Elections were advertised for three Commissioners, two Associate Judges, one Clerk of the Circuit Court and one Recorder, to be held in Cicero, Madison, Jefferson and Prairie Townships.
