CAMPBELL lived in Abington, VA., in 1812, 1813 and 1814, and there, by his 1st marriage, became connected with the Holston CAMPBELL's, whose ancestor, John CAMPBELL; a scotsman, moved 1st to Ireland, and then to Phila. PA., in 1726. Samuel Y. CAMPBELL died at Upland, DEL. Mar. 28, 1856. His wife died Jan. 24, 1876. You wish to know something of William CAMPBELL, father of Capt. Samuel CAMPBELL. (my note.... I am assuming this is referring to the Holston CAMPBELL's) I learn from the sons of Samuel Campbell that their grandfather lived in Prince Edward Co., VA. Capt Samuel CAMPBELL has been dead 17 or 20 years. (my note.... this was publ. 1911) He left numerous wealthy and respectable relations. James HAGAN has 5 or 6 brothers who resided in the southern part of the State in 1848. The 1st of the Bedford Co. family of CAMPBELLs, known to me, was Thomas CAMPBELL; his sons, William and Robert., inherited a good estate from him. Col. William CAMPBELL had for a great many yrs. been in public life, and died a member of the State Senate of VA. in the yr. 1844 or 1845, leaving no children, and bequeathing his whole estate to his brother, Robert CAMPBELL. Mr. Robt. CAMPBELL is an excellent farmer, a man of good sense and exceptional character. He has been much in public life as a member of the House of Delegates, and, having a lg. estate, is occupied very much in it;s management. He has a lg. family of children settled in Bedford Co. all of whom are amongst our best citizens; one of his sons, a lawyer, is regarded as a young man of very high prominence; this is Henry CAMPBELL, removed from Lynchburg, VA., to New York, N. Y. ------------------------- continued pg 246 pt 3 Robert CAMPBELL's grandfather was William CAMPBELL, and he removed from Prince Edward Co. VA., to Bedford Co. VA. His wife's name was Dila CALDWELL; they had 4 sons and must have settled in this country about the yr. 1770. There was Samuel, Thomas (Robt's father), William and John. Samuel CAMPBELL married a widow KENNEDY, and had a lg. family of both sexes; two were John and Samuel. John married a miss CLARK, a sister of Judge CLARK, of Kentucky, and removed to Madison Co. KY. He died without children. Wm. moved to Madison Co., ALA; he raised a lg. family of children; all went with him to ALA. EXTRACT FROM ROBT. CAMPBELL'S LETTER "My father, Thomas, died June 7, 1827. My mother died the Aug. preceding his death." "They had 5 children; two died in infancy; the 3rd, a daug. married a Mr. Gray. They had 8 children. She died in 1815." "My brother, Wm. died without children. My descendants are the only ones of my grandfather CAMPBELL bearing his name that I know of living in this State." I have 8 children - 5 sons and 3 daughters. The most of them are living near Liberty. I live on the Lynchburg & Salem Turnpike, about 10 miles west of Liberty. (This writer was a 1st cousin of Samuel Y. CAMPBELL, A. H. C.) My sons are; Wm. Thomas, Henry (a lawyer, who md. Miss CRALLEY, of Lynchburg), James and Robt. (a doctor, who lives at Martinsville, VA., 1855)." Samuel CAMPBELL was a Capt. in the Rev. War and was at the surrender of Cornwallis. He died in 1820. His wife, Mrs. KENNEDY (Mary ANDERSON) died in 1822. They had 6 sons and 5 daughters, namely: Wm. John, Samuel, James, Anderson (dead), Caldwell, Eliz. (Mrs. BANTON, dead), Anne Mrs. GENTRY, dead), Mary (Mrs. ANDERSON, dead), Judith (Mrs. LOGAN, dead) and Minerva (Mrs. LOGAN, dead). pg. 247 Alexander Hamilton CAMPBELL, 2nd child of Samuel Y.
