On August 30, 1882 at the age of 16, Charles left Germany for the United States. He sailed out of Bremen, Germany on a ship named the Koln. Charles arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on September 30, 1882. Soon after his arrival, Charles moved to Hagerstown, Maryland where he lived until 1887. In 1887 Charles moved to Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee where he met and married his first wife, Louisa Morton "Mo" Oldfield on March 11, 1888. Mo Oldfield was the daughter of James Coffee Oldfield and Permilia Caroline "Angel". Charles and Mo Gerbig were the parents four children: Margaret Caroline (Oct 11, 1889 - Feb 9, 1958), Claude James (Sep 5, 1891 - Sep 24, 1964), Harry Parker (Feb 13, 1894 - Jan 18, 1922) and William Walter McKinley (Oct 7, 1896 - Jun 22, 1986). Not long after the birth of William Walter McKinley Gerbig, Mo Oldfield died. It is believed that she hemorrhaged to death. On August 1, 1898 Charles Gerbig was Naturalized a U.S. citizen at the Coffee County, Tennessee courthouse. On January 7, 1900 in Coffee County, Tennessee, Charles Gerbig married Katheran Frances Summers. Charles and Katheran were the parents of nine children: Laura Elizabeth (May 8, 1901 - Jun 22, 1986), Lena Barbara (Jun 24, 1904 - Sep 8, 1985), Fred Thompson (Jul 10, 1906 - Aug 15, 1976), John Gerrard (Nov 10, 1908 - Nov 11, 1979), Miller Noah (Jan 20, 1911 - Aug 29, 1986), Ruth Naomi (Aug 20, 1913 - May 8, 1956), Charles Richard (May 4, 1916 - Dec 29, 1989), Myrtle Irene (Sep 26, 1919 - Nov 12, 1995) and James Melton (Nov 25, 1923 - Jun 10, 1963). About 1912 Charles and most of the family moved to New Madrid County, Missouri. About 1917 - 1918 the family moved to Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. Charles Gottfried Gerbig lived the remainder of his natural life in Evansville, Indiana. Charles Gerbig died on October 7, 1931 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was buried in Tupman Cemetery on October 10, 1931.
