The capital of Vigo county, and one of the most important and promising cities of the State. It is situated on the Terre Haute & Indianapolis, the Terre Haute, Alton & St. Louis, and the Evansville & Crawfordsville railroads, and on the Wabash river and Wabash & Erie canal, seventy-three miles from Indianapolis, one hundred and nine north of Evansville, and about equidistant from Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Louisville. It was settled in 1816, but dates its prosperity from the completion of its railroad communication with the East. It has now a population of over 20,000. The surrounding country, tributary to Terre Haute, is not excelled in fertility by any in the State, and is owned and tilled by wealthy and intelligent farmers. Its manufacturing interests are extensive and thriving. It has a large iron rolling mill and nail factory, six large flouring mills, two woolen factories, three foundries, and numerous other manufacturing establishments. Coal and iron ore abound in the immediate vicinity, furnishing fuel and material for its workshops. In educational facilities it is not excelled by any city in the West. In addition to its well conducted public schools, there are two large female seminaries there— St. Agnes Hall, under the care of the Episcopal church, which cost over one hundred thousand dollars; and St. Mary's of the Woods, four miles west of the city, under the management of the Catholic Sisters of Providence. The State Normal School building was located here by act of the Legislature, and will, when completed and occupied, establish the claim of Terre Haute as the center of the educational interests of the State. Fifteen churches are represented in the city, some of them occupying edifices of considerable architectural beauty. Two daily papers are published here, and are a credit to the place. The streets are lighted by gas, and several lines of street railroad are in operation. It has a well ordered fire department, with two steam fire engines, and in all other respects is not behind its sister cities. It is one of the most heathful and beautiful, as it is destined to be one of the most populous of western inland cities. Agricultural implements. Scott & Son, cor Fifth and Ohio Ale and Porter.
