The Terre Haute Morning Star Saturday, January 12, 1907 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Gowen Case Given to Jury in Brazil --------------------------------------------------------------------- Defendant Goes on Stand and Declares He Shot Officer in Self-Defense --------------------------------------------------------------------- Twelve Divorces Granted --------------------------------------------------------------------- Brazil, Ind, Jan. 11 -- (Spl) The case against Bert Gowen charged with assault with intent to kill Officer Ernest Garrison a few weeks ago, was given to the jury in the Circuit court here at 5 o'clock this evening. No verdict has been returned and it is thought that if the jury reaches a verdict it will be sealed and will not be opened before court is convened tomrorrow morning. The last witness in the case was the defendant. He declared that he had no intention of shooting the officer until Garrison drew his gun, and that he fired in self-defense. The witness was vigorously cross-examined by Prosecutor Hughes, but he stuck to his story. The argument was begun at 2 o'clock, each side being given one hour to present its case to the jury. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Attorneys P. T. Luther, George A. Knight and A. C. Miller were chosen special judges to try divorce cases and twelve were disposed of. Ada Puckett was granted a divorce from Richard Puckett on the grounds of cruel and injuman treatment. Mary J. Hatcher was granted a decree of civorce from Rufus Hatcher, her plea being cruel treatment. The case of Mary E. Garber against James Garber was heard by Judge Knight, who, after hearing the evidence, gave the plaintiff a decree of divorce and gave her the custody of their five children. David Navel was granged a divorce from Rella Navel on the plea of abandonment. He was awarded the custody of their child until further order of the court. Bessie M. Stevens was given a divorce from Walter Stevens. The evidence showed that Bessie was quarrelsome. Mary E. Smith was given a divorce from Alfred Smith on the plea of cruel and inhuman treatment and her maiden name of Mary Durgass was restored. Robert M. Harrison secured a divorce from Lydia B. Harrison on the plea of cruel and inhuman treatment. Several witnesses were introduced in the divorce trial of Elizabeth Danbury vs. William Danbury. Elizabeth was given a divorce, the plea being cruel treatment and failure to provide and her maiden anme of Elizabeth Modisett was restored. Mary Hilligas was given divorce from Jackson Hilligas, the plea being abandonment. George W. Diggs was granted a divorce from Minerva Diggs on the plea of cruel and inhuman treatment. The case of Lora Neice vs. Quincy Neice to annul their marriage was heard before Special Judge P. T. Luther and he rendered a verdict in favor of the plaintiff. The evidence showed that the plaintiff was only 15 years of age when she was married. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Seelyville Couple Married Paris, Ill, Jan 11 -- (Spl) -- Albert E.
