Fleenor was the son of Hoosier pioneer settlers Abraham Fleenor and wife Nancy Greene. James was born 9 Jan 1831 and married Nancy Emeline Nelson 14 July 1853 in Washington County. He died in Marion County on 5 March 1868. James C. served in the Union forces in the 18th Regiment, having enlisted August 1861 and discharged September 1863 in Indianapolis from Company G with a disability. He served in the "western" theatre of war. This James C. is often mistaken with a James M. or James W. who was the son of John Fleenor and Louisa Bowman Fleenor wo served in the 66th Indiana Regiment. James C. Fleenor, son of Abraham was the grandson of Nicholas & Maria Catharina Fleenor who lived in Washington County, Virginia near Abingon. Nicholas immigrated to Philadelphia in 1754 from Wurttemberg Germany with his family. His parents were Johannes and Anna Flinner. They lived in PA., then in MD., before Nicholas and most of his siblings settled in the frontier area of Southwest Virginia in the Holston River valley. It was the children of those German immigrants who migrated up through the Cumberland Gap into Ky. and IN. frontier regions.
