P.E. Hinshaw was born in Randolph County, Ind., Aug. 6, 1848, a son of Solomon and Rachel (Hodgin) Hinshaw, natives of North Carolina, who, with their parents, settled in the above county in an early day. He was reared on a farm and after attaining his majority worked at the carpenter's trade in connection with farming. He was married Sept. 9, 1869, to Emma Haisley, and subsequently removed to Rice County, Kan. While living in Kansas his crops were twice destroyed by grasshoppers. He visited his old home in the interest of the Friends, and was successful in securing considerable aid with which to build them a meetinghouse. He entered the ministry of that society in Kansas, and has labored energetically for its benefit. In November, 1882, he was called to the society in Milton.
