Lumpkins, farmer and stock-raiser, section 26, Dalton Township, was born in what is now Dalton Township, Wayne County, April 15, 1835, the fifth son of James and Sarah (Thornburg) Lumpkins, the former a native of Virginia, and the latter of Tennessee. They came to Wayne County, Ind., in 1818, and resided three years in Perry Township after which they lived in Jefferson Township one year. They then moved to Dalton Township and purchased the farm now occupied by our subject, where they passed the rest of their days. Our subject received a common-school education and resided with his parents till he attained his majority. He then purchased lands in Dallas County, Iowa, where he resided two years, when he sold out and returned to his native county. He was married Sept. 9, 1858, to Rachel J., daughter of John W. Jordon, of Perry Township. Of their nine children seven survive---Mary C., America J., Robert H., Sarah M. F., James, John C. and William A. Those deceased are---Charles and Orin. After his marriage he lived ten years on the farm now owned by William D. Jordon, after which he lived three years on the S. M. Jordon farm. He then purchased the old homestead, containing 314 acres of well-improved land, where he has since resided.
