His parents moved to Wayne County, Ind., when he was young, and he was educated at the Centreville College. He held the position of clerk in the auditor's office, and was with his father in the Government disbursing department for some little during the late war. He was Second Lieutenant of Company F, Seventy-eighth Indiana Infantry, and was on duty near Vicksburg, Miss., where the poor water and warm climate caused the death of a great many of the members of his company. He was married in October, 1863, to Sarah A., daughter of Benjamin and Eliza (Dakin) Jemison, both now living. They have two children---Benjamin F. and Maud E. In February, 1876, Mr. Martin engaged in his present mercantile business in which he has been very successfu1.
