His early education was received in the common schools. He afterward attended the normal school at Lebanon, Ohio, and Earlham College, Richmond, Ind. He resided with his parents till manhood, then engaged in the same business as his father, and to which he had been reared. He has been successful in his transactions, and is now one of the promising young farmers of New Garden Township. He was married June 10, 1874, to Lillie, daughter of Charles and Naomi (McIlvain) Mather, a native, of Philadelphia, Penn. They have four children---Irene S., Samuel Ernest, Naomi Lillian, D. Lindley. Mr. and Mrs. Mather are members of the Society of Friends. Politically he is a Republican.
