His father, Thomas M. McConaha, was a native of Virginia, and when a boy came with his parents to Wayne County, Ind., and settled three miles south of Centreville. He was an extensive farmer and stock-dealer, owning a whole section of land. He was a very successful manager, and a good citizen. He married Christina Kramer, of Butler County, Ohio. They had seven children---Barbary, Lewis, Taylor, Simon, George, Walter and Ada. His wife died, and he afterward married Martha Eliason, and to them were born two children---Ella and Omer. Mr. McConaha died in 1877. Simon McConaha remained on the home farm till his majority, and in the winters of 1873, 1874 and 1875 taught school. In 1876 he went to Randolph County and improved a small farm, which he traded for another, on which he lived, till 1881. He then spent the summer in the West, visiting Kansas and the Indian Territory, and in March, 1882, bought what is now known as the American Hotel, which he improved and now rents. He also built a stable, where he is now engaged in keeping a sale and livery stable. In 1878 Mr. McConaha was married to Alpha, daughter of James and Catherine Snofford. They have two children---Carl and Elmer.
