Mills was born in Warren County, Ohio, Dec.18, 1813, a son of John and Prudence (Thomas) Mills, his father a native of South Carolina, of Irish descent, and his mother a native of North Carolina. His parents came North with their parents when children, and settled in Ohio, where they were married. In 1820 they removed to Wayne County, Ind., and settled in the extreme northern part of the county, purchasing fifty acres of land, but three of it cleared, with a small log cabin. They were members of the Society of Friends. The mother died Jan. 24, 1854, and the father in October, 1859. Of their seven children but two are living. Our subject is the eldest of the family. He remained at home till manhood, and then went to learn the carpenter's trade, serving a year's apprenticeship. He then worked at his trade nine years, and with his earnings bought eighty acres of land in Randolph, just over the line from Wayne County, where he lived till February, 1881, when he moved to Fountain City. He was married Dec. 1, 1840, to Lutititia Templeton, a native of Miami County, Ohio. Five children have been born to them---Caroline, Constantine, Lafayette, Lucretia and Emma. Mrs. Mills is a member of the Christian church. Mr. Mills is a member of Lodge No. 228, A. F. & A. M., in Randolph County, Ind.
