He resided at home till he grew to manhood, and then began life for himself. He took the contract of cutting 133 cords of wood, at 31¼ cents a cord, and 5,000 rails, of Allen Lewis. He was married Feb. 2, 1843, to Elizabeth, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Shirley) Ballenger. They have had a family of nine children, seven of whom are living---Sarah A., Henderson B., Phoebe A., Lewis P., George W., Fanny E., William E. The deceased are---Jacob S. and Joseph E. After his marriage Mr. Oler rented land five years, and then bought 120 acres, where he has since resided. He subsequently added to his farm till he had 700 acres, all well improved. He has divided his land with his children, reserving 200 acres for his own use. Mr. and Mrs. Oler are members of the United Brethren church.
