Scantland, farmer and stock-raiser, was born in Culpeper County, Va., June 18, 1831, a son of George W. and Catherine (Burdett) Scantland, and when a child came with his parents to Wayne County, Ind. They lived in Dublin one year, then moved to a farm three miles south of Milton, residing there three years. The family then moved to Delaware County, where the father died, leaving his wife with seven children, our subject being the fourth child. When he was ten years old his mother died, and he lived with his sister till he was fifteen years of age, when he came to Wayne County. When he was nineteen years of age he began learning the carpenter's trade, serving an apprenticeship of two years with Calvin Marshall, after which he engaged in business for himself in Perry Township, until about 1873. He was married Dec. 18, 1853, to Annie Hollingsworth, a native of Ohio, but reared in Perry Township, Wayne County, Ind. They have had twelve children---Rachel E. (deceased), Aura Melinda, Elvira Josephine, Elmer Ellsworth, Sarah Alice, Edgar Allen, Hannah Lovinda, Emma Caroline, Oliver Howard, Frankie C. and Freddie L. (twins), the latter deceased, and Harry Ernest. After his marriage Mr. Scantland moved to his farm on section 22, Perry Township, and engaged in agricultural pursuits, and is now the owner of 309 acres of well-cultivated land, which he has won by his own exertions. He and his wife are active members of the United Brethren church.
