He was married in 1850 to Henrietta, daughter of John and Catherine Farlow, who came from North Carolina to Union County, Ind. in an early day. The result of this marriage was four children--- John F., Jacob S., Mary E. and Richard E. Soon after his marriage Mr. Smelser settled on the farm now occupied by his family, and which contains 326 acres of land. He followed agricultural pursuits through life, and was one of the enterprising cattle raisers of the neighborhood. He was a member of the Universalist church. His death occurred Sept. 28, 1882, in his fifty-ninth year. His parents came to Wayne County, Ind., in 1822, from Kentucky, and spent the rest of their lives in Boston Township. Jacob Smelser died Dec. 8, 1875, aged ninety-one years, and his wife died at the age of seventy-five years, Apr. 7, 1869.
