Smith, agent of the Fort Wayne, C & L. and Whitewater railroads, was born in Lancaster County, Pa., in December, 1829. When eight years of age he came to Clarke County, Ohio. When he grew to manhood he taught school five terms, after which he worked at the tanner's trade until 1857 in Clarke County. He then came to Wayne County, Ind., where be continued to work at his trade until 1861, when he enlisted in Company D, Eighth Indiana Infantry. He participated in the battles of Pea Ridge, siege of Vicksburg, Opequon, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek and a number of others. He served three years and eleven months and was mustered out in the spring of 1865. Returning to Wayne County he opened a grocery in which he continued for several years, and in 1870 he accepted his present position. He was married in 1855 to Maria Roller, of Clarke County, Ohio. Mr. Smith has served one term as Councilman of Cambridge City. He is a member of Lodge No.5, A. F. & A. M., of Cambridge City.
