Snider, deceased, was born near Martinsburg, Va., Aug. 16, 1796, and when a child his parents moved to Lebanon, Ohio, where he learned the cabinet-maker's trade, at which he worked a number of years. In 1831 he moved to Hamilton, Ohio, and in 1833, to Centreville, Ind., where he engaged in the dry-goods business, which he followed twenty years. He had one of the largest stores in the town and was very successful, being very popular with all his customers. He was one of the original Directors of the First National Bank of Centreville, and took a great interest in the success of the undertaking. Politically he was a Republican, and always took an active part in all points at issue of interest to his party. He left his room a week before his death to go to the polls to vote. He was a fine financier and very judicious in his investments. He was married in 1826 to Mary Smith, a native of Warren County, Ohio, born Feb. 22, 1804. Her parents were natives of Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio at an early day. She is the youngest of their eight children and the only one living. Mr. and Mrs. Snider had a family of four children---Samuel G., of White County, Ind.; William H., of Logansport, Ind.; Kate, wife of Thomas F. Gentry; Charlotte M., now Mrs. Coffin. Mr. Snider was an Elder of the Presbyterian church, his wife being a member of the same church. He died in May, 1883, in his eighty-seventh year.
