Y., May 22, 1830, the eldest son of John and Sarah M. (Lawrence) Whippo, and when five years of age came with his parents to Wayne County, Ind. They made the journey in a wagon and located near Dublin. He was reared on a farm. His early education was obtained in the common school, but he subsequently took up the study of the higher branches, including languages. After reaching his majority he assisted in laying out the Indiana Central Railroad, following surveying one year. He then was engaged in the agricultural implement business as salesman, and subsequently was employed on the railroad three years. Jan. 3, 1856, he was married to Matilda, daughter of Robert S. and Rachel Preston, and in March, 1856, moved to Clay County, where he remained eight years, engaged in farming and selling agricultural implements for the Wayne Agricultural Implement Company, of Dublin. In August, 1864, he returned to Wayne County, and bought his present farm in New Garden Township, consisting of 146 acres of well-improved land. Mr. and Mrs. Whippo have had seven children---Louie L., Carrie E., Edmund L., Maria M., James H., Anna P., and Mattie P. The latter died at the age of thirteen years.
