Woodard, farmer and stock-raiser, was born in Wayne County, N. C., March 15, 1823, a son of Cader and Rachel L(Outland) Woodard. Coming to Indiana when but three years old, he was reared and educated in Wayne County. He remained on the farm assisting his parents, when not engaged in teaching or going to school, till twenty-five years of age. March 29, 1848, he was married to Sarah Burgess, a teacher, and a native of Jefferson County, Ohio, and a daughter of John and Margaret (Wood) Burgess. Her father, a native of Maryland, and her mother, of Chester County, Pa., are of English descent. After his marriage Mr. Woodard resided on a farm near the old homestead. He then moved to the farm where he now lives. To Mr. and Mrs. Woodard have been born seven children, but five of whom are living---Charles, Thomas, Mary, Henry and Irvin E. The eldest, Eliza Jane, and the second youngest, Minnie, are deceased. Mr. Woodard has given his children good educational advantages, four of them having been teachers. . He and his family are members of the Society of Friends. His wife an accredited minister in that church.
