Francis, October 13th. He was one of the past commanders of our post, No. 179, Grand Army of the Republic. For several years he has been our quatermaster. Methodical, orderly and systematic, he knew every article of property and kept it in its place. He knew every member of the post and his home. Kind, obliging, and attentive, he could fill any office. Always present he was ready to listen or tell of army experience. Our loss in his death seems now beyond repair. He planned and worked for the good of the order. Every member had his confidence and considered him a true comrade. We will cherish his memory as one of the helpful factors of our lives. Our charter is draped, our flag is bound with crepe and our hearts are saddened. Our sincere sympathy is given to his wife and children in their great loss. We realize theirs is the heaviest burden. They have received the keenest stroke. His army record is clean and honorable. In the dark days of the Rebellion he entered the Union army as a volunteer and was mustered into Company M , First Iowa Cavalry, June 1861, serving until March 18th, 1866, securing promotion as orderly sargeant thus giving nearly four of the best years of his young manhood to save the Union. The rest of his life he suffered because of the wounds received and because of the hardships, exposure, toil and privations. The long, weary march is ended, the last roll call has been answered and taps have sounded. Adopted by rising vote of the Post.
