He attended the Red Men's Lodge Saturday evening and was in his usual health, which at best was not strong. He retired at his usual hour and at the fatal moment was awakened with a severe cough. The summons came quickly and he answered it without a sigh. Mr. Francis was born at Mobile, Alabama, April 11, 1841, and died at the age of 68 years and 6 months. While living at Davenport, Iowa, Sept. 2 1861, he enlisted in Company M, First Iowa cavalry, and was mustered out with his company at Austin, Texas, February 15, 1868. This service of more than four years in which he was several times wounded, shattered his health and he was never a well man afterward. February 14, 1867, at New Castle, he was married to Marie M. Haase, who shared his pleasure and sorrows for more than 40 years. He is survived by the widow and four sons - William H. and J. Thomas, at Indianapolis, Charles of Acton, and Ray of East St. Louis, and three daughters, Lillie M. Alexander and Alpha Naomi, of this city and Margaret E. Landis, of Casey, Illinois. One daughter Minnie Irene preceded him in death November 28 1890. Mr. Francis was long identified with the local G.A.R. and the Red Men. He gave most of his time to these orders and was much respected for it. In this work he will be missed as few men were more faithful in attendance. He was a good soldier and likewise a good citizen. A clean, honorable gentleman has gone to his reward, and the world is better for his having lived. Funeral services were held at the family home Tuesday afternoon and conducted by Rev. Huntington of (?), and assisted by G.A.R. post and the Red Men. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Burial at Riverside.
