Mr. Kimmel was born at the Kimmel homestead east of Milton, June 8, 1833, the fourth of twelve children born to Jacob and Martha Wilmer Kimmel. The father of this large and prominent family located in Washington township in 1823, having come, when a young man, from his birthplace in Schulkill county, Pa., in company with his brother-in-law, Daniel Waltz, and others of that name to the then far West in search of land and a home. That he succeeded well is record in the fact that he acquired a tract of 370 acres, and with the help of his sons and daughters cleared a home of property and content from the almost unbroken wilderness. In this great struggle, little known to the present generation, William Kimmel bore an honorable and industrious part. Later he acquired 180 acres of the land he helped to clear and till, and here, December 25, 1857, he took his bride, who was Miss Vashti Willits, daughter of William and Mary Willits, who lived on the farm now owned by Samuel Blaer, immediately southwest of Cambridge City. This ;union was blessed by five children - Monroe who died in infancy, Clara wife of Squire Cornthwait, of Cambridge City, Nora, wife of Adam Spence, of Indianapolis, and Clayton, who lives on the home farm. The fourth child of Mr. and Mrs. Kimmel died in infancy. From these have descended 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Mr. Kimmel was a pioneer, and with the wife who survives him, soured to the hardships of the early development of this country. In politics he was always a Democrat, and in his prime a local leader of his party. He was in a sense a leader strong men engaged tin forwarding the various means whereby the resources and conveniences of his home township were made available, and his name will long be revered by those who knew him for his interest in matter of church, school and whatever tended to the up building of the community. His declining years and weeks of sickness were soothed by the gentle ministration of his invalid wife, his children, and his grandchildren, and particularly by his step grandsons, Jesse H. and Wm. O. Huddleston, who never tired in whatever was for his comfort. Mr. Kimmel was the last of his father's family, and with him disappears on the wave of time a family that for 90 years was identified with the best interests of Washington township. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Franklin church, where Mr. Kimmel's thoughts ever turned in matters religious, and to the upkeep of which he was always read. Rev. McCormick, of Milton had charge of the services, assisted by Harry Doty, who sang several very pretty solos. Burial was in that cemetery.
