The Retrospect 1925 Issued by The Senior Class of P. A. Allen High School Bluffton, Indiana Volume Eight =========================================================================== (signed) Luzern Weilemann (Editor-in-Chief) (signed) Harry A. McFarren Jr. (Business Manager) =========================================================================== Supt. Allen - "May he live long and prosper! Our genial superintendent is waiting here at his desk for good reports from all of the pupils of the Bluffton Schools." School Board: Mr. Rogers Mr. Kain Mrs. Patton =========================================================================== Faculty ------- Mr. John M. French - This man skillfully holds the position of principal in P.A. Allen High School. This is his fifth year here and we hope he'll be with us for many more. Mrs. Pearl Huff Bartholomew - Mrs. Bart has been with us three years. She can make English real interesting, which is saying a lot. Aside from teaching English she teaches Bible, Public Speaking and good behavior in the study halls. (A.B. Indiana University, '05; Ohio State University; Chicago University; George Washington University; Emory University) Miss Helen O. Riggs - Another English marm but quite different in her own way. Her hobby is dramatics, and in this she reigns supreme. This is her first year in Bluffton; but, if left up to us, we would say it's not her last. (Earlham College, A.B.; Columbia University, M.A.) Mrs. Wm. C. Ratliff - She teaches English, but knows a little of everything else. We are willing to book her for as long as she will stay. Just a word of advice before going to her class or study-hall--throw out your gum, and don't put any more in your mouth. (A.B. Indiana University, '17) Miss Blanche Karns - She teaches Latin with the thought of a nice ride in her Buick helping her through the day. Before she bought her car she knew a lot about science, art, music, etc. We believe she still knows just as much; but, just the same, the Buick holds first place in her heart and mind. (Indiana University, A.B.) My. Byron R. Henderson - Little but mighty. Spanish and French he doth speak fluently. He is so meek and mannerly we have all grown quite fond of him. But alas, his heart is elsewhere! We wish he would marry, and his wife would lend him to us for a couple more years at least. (Earlham College; Indiana University, '21, A.B.; University of Spain, Madrid, Diploma de Suficiencia.) Miss Welthy/Weltha Agatha Shively - What she doesn't know about history we don't either. She also has a great deal of knowledge about civics and economics. She is the sort of teacher you want to work for and you usually do. It might not be a bad idea to advise those who are going to take work of her in the future, to learn the meaning of the word "significance" for you're sure to meet it in her class. (A.B. Indiana University, '21) Miss Harriet Geiger - She teaches History, Civics and Occupations. A friend to everybody and everybody her friend. This is her second year in Allen High, but she is welcome to stay until she draws a pension even if she does change her name. (A.B., DePauw University, '23) Mr. Wm. C. Ratliff - We hope he likes our high school as well as we like him. He teaches science and seems to know his stuff. He has the regular teacher trait of making his pupils work, but that is in the game, and we won't hold it against him. (Indiana University, A.B., '16) Mr. Glen Coolman - Glen has been with us for two years. He is noted in B.H.S. for the basketball second team that he has developed. He knows as much science as we could ever hope to know. He also teaches algebra. Don't mistake his expression for frowning, because he has a beautiful smile. (Indiana State Normal) Mrs. Fred (Agnes M.) Morris - Mathematics and Fred are her specialties. She has also taught us how to yell. We can scarcely do without her next year, so here's hoping "hubby" doesn't take her away. (Indiana University, '23, A.B.) Mr. Alfred R. Protsman - He fills the bill as a Commercial teacher O.K. This is his first year in P.A. Allen High, but we sincerely hope he will grace us with his presence another year at least. Miss Mary Shafer - This teacher is Commercially inclined, also. If you love lectures go to her class. The only trouble with her is that she can never keep her face straight, and her lectures turn out to be friendly advice. (B.S., Indiana State Normal, '24) Mr. M.S. Smith - Agriculture is his hobby. He looks to be such a quiet man, but that's not saying he doesn't know how to teach. We extend to him a hearty welcome for a stay with us next year. (Purdue University, B.S.A.) Miss Bessie Sale - We do not know what she teaches most - Sewing or matchmaking, but in both she is hard to excel. "Bess" has been with us for some time, and we hope she always will be, for where she goes, there will we have to go also. (DePauw University, A. B. '08; Worcester Domestic Science School, Worcester, Mass., '15) Miss Nondes Hagler - Home Economics is her line. Needless to say we love to visit her department. The best part of all is she seems to understand our hunger for good things and often gives us wonderful eats. (Indiana University, B.S.) Mr. L.E. Templin - Manual Training and Athletics are where he shines. There is something about the man that makes everybody like him. Guess it's just because he's he. We hope he likes us well enough to stay on for we can't afford to lose him. (Tri State, '22) Mr. Oscar Rippe - We wonder some times whether if he and Russell aren't twins. In looks and manner and methods of teaching athletics there is certainly a great resemblance. (LaCross, Wis.) Miss Lucile Waltz - She teaches the girls' Physical Training. She seems rather small for such a big job, but her height doesn't bother her at all. This is her second year here, and we hope she remembers that three is the charm. (Western State Normal, Mich.) Miss Alice E. Peters - She is the Art Supervisor and stands supreme in her domain. We are expecting some wonderful artists from her pupils, and if they don't turn out good we know it won't be her fault. (Thomas Normal, Detroit) Miss Sarah I. McConnell - She hath a method all her own. She is the Music Supervisor. She has certainly done us a lot of good since she has been with us. We hope she will not leave us for good because she has just started us on the upward movement in music. (Indianapolis Conservatory of Music, B.M.; Cornell University, D.P.S.M.) Mr. A. Edward White - You can tell he is smart by looking at him.
