PREFACE
This volume is part, of an effort to provide for each Indiana county an index of
the names of persons and firms contained in county histories, atlases,
gazetteers and miscellaneous local publications. The WPA produced several
volumes, other counties have been indexed by other persons and agencies. The
Indiana Historical Society, in cooperation with the Fort Wayne- Allen County
Public Library, is completing the remaining county indexes.

Subject entries and place names are not included, as references to such material
can usually be found in tables of contents. In histories covering more than one
county, only that portion dealing with the county indexed is included. In such
cases, material relative to each of the various counties will be indexed
independently of the remained of the volume.

All names are entered as they appear in the text. No effort has been made to
differentiate between one or more persons with the identical name.

The symbol preceding the page number, appears only with the first reference to a
given work. The names of married women are carried in two entries: One, the
maiden name; the other, the married name. Cross references to surnames which are
similar in spelling and pronunciation are usually supplied, but in all cases,
alternatives should be considered.

Symbols for publications indexed are usually composed of the initial letter of
the author's surname or some other symbol determined arbitrarily.
