O. Luse was going home, he was fired at near Harry Gardner's butcher shop, on Bridge street, by one of two men who met him there. Three or four shots (the stories differ on this point) were fired, when Luse started for home on the double quick, and left his would-be annihilators. One shot took effect in his left hip, making a sever but not dangerous flesh wound. It is proper in this connection to say that Luse has for a long time borne a very bad reputation in this community, and is strongly suspected of belongingn to a gang of horse thieves which has been committing extensive depredations in this neighborhood. Whether guilty or not, there is little doubt that he owes this attak upon him to the suspicions which have been aroused against him. There has been so much successfu horse stealing going on around here lately that the people are greatly exasperated and have determined that a stop must be put to this thieving. Of course, this state of affairs is to be strongly deprecated, and we hope that the sober second thought of our people will show them that the best way to do under all circumstances is to give every man a fair trial for his life, and discourage all attempts at mob law. We expected to give Luse's version of this matter in this week's paper.-- He requested us to publish a communication written by him, to which we assented, but he left town on Wednesday evening without furnishing us the article. More Shooting Last Wednesday night, as Geary Neal was coming down 12th street, past C. H. Pratt's block, he was fired upon by a man on horseback, from the road. Geary promptly returned the fire, and the horseman rode off.-- As far as known, neither shot took effect--at any rate, Neal was uninjured. Geary Neal is a young man of good reputation, and the only reason for his being shot at must be that he was supposed to take a prominent part in working up a case against the horse thieves. Another action of this sort will exasperate the people of this section so that they will turn out en masse and exterminate the whole gang of thieves.
