Clarence H., 78, died at Providence Alaska Medical Center, Anchorage, AK on July 5, 2005 of congestive heart failure. Service was held July 8, 2005 at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Anchorage with burial in Ft. Richardson National Cemetery. Brig. Gen. Ryherd was born in Iola, KS on Aug. 19, 1926 to Clarence Peter and Agnes Ryherd. He graduated high school in Wichita and attended two years of college. In 1943 he enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Combat Flight Engineer, flying submarine patrol missions in the Caribbean during the period of major enemy naval action along the east coast of the US, until he accepted a discharge in 1947. He then enlisted in the US Air Force serving as a Crew Chief and Flight Line Chief. He chose to make Alaska his home in 1950 after an assignment at Elmendorf AFB. He was discharged in 1952 and has lived in Anchorage ever since. In 1953, he joined the Alaska Air National Guard as a Technical Sergeant and was promoted through the ranks to Chief Master Sergeant before completing his enlisted service in June 1965. He remained in the Alaska Air National Guard holding the positions as Aircraft Maintenance Officer, Operations Officer, Commander of the 176th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Commander of Logistics, Director of Logistics, Director of Maintenance and on May 12, 1980 the Adjutant General named him Assistant Adjutant General (Air) for the Alaska National Guard. He retired in 1983 with the rank of Brigadier General. Among the awards and decorations he held were the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, the Alaska Commendation Medal, the Alaska Distinguished Service Medal and the Alaska National Guard (US) Meritorious Service Award. A registered big game guide, his many hobbies included being a trophy fisherman and hunter. He was also a gourmet cook. His family writes "He will be greatly missed and will always be in our hearts." Preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Ryherd; daughter, Linda Resner; 2 great-grandchildren and his father.
