So it will seem to many as they read these lines and think of the manly, lovable boy whose life among us was so short and whose outgoing was so painful and unexpected. Fred Stokes, only son of R. T. Stokes, was born in Garnett, July 22, 1881, and met his death as a result of a kick by a horse, April 24, 1893, aged eleven years, nine months and two days. That is all: for his was the uneventful life of thousands of other boys who live and grow toward manhood in the town where they are born. But who will try and fill up those eleven years as they deserve? Who will measure the love that multiplied by a sort of divine progression in the home as the character of the boy developed and grew more lovable? Who will tell the loss to the church as an earnest, young disciple full of zeal and faith and courage who thus early changes the cross for the crown. Fred was a noble type of the American boy, clear headed and manly. He loved business and was beginning to make himself a place among men. A good scholar; he loved his books and bade fair to win distinction in that direction. A jolly fun-loving, clean boy, he won and kept a host of loving friends as evinced by the anxiety felt on all sides during his illness and the crowds that followed him to his grave. An active member of the Junior League and the Methodist church, he loved them both and was a loyal, efficient helper in all lines where he was placed for service. He loved the Saviour, trusted fully in Him and went into eternity without a fear. The funeral took place, Wednesday, from the M. E. church, conducted by his pastor. The members of the Junior League conducted the singing. JOHN F.
