LATENSER SUCCUMBS TO PNUEMONIA One of Atchison's finest women, Mrs. Carl Latenser, 63, died at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at her home in the Latenser apartments, 1104 Kansas avenue, of pneumonia and complications. While she had been in very poor health since 1938, Mrs. Latenser's death came as a shock to her family and friends because her condition was not critical until early yesterday. She felt bad Friday but did not become bedfast until Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart church. Interment will be in Mt Calvary cemetery in the family lot. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Stanton & Stanton chapel, where the body will remain until funeral time. Mrs. Latenser came to Atchison as a bride more than 40 years ago and had lived here continuously since. Her husband, who operates the Latenser Music store, has been in business in Atchison since early in 1900. BORN IN ILLINOIS The 13th in a family of 17 children, Mrs. Latenser was born near Libertyville, Ill., October 8, 1881. Her parents, John and Margaret Spellman, purchased a farm adjacent to the town of Beloit, Kas, in 1873, but Mr. Spellman became ill and they returned temporarily to their former home in Illinois for a year. It was during this time that their daughter, Margaret Antoinette, was born. She was only a year old when the family made the return trip to Kansas in a covered wagon. Margaret Spellman was reared at Beloit and attended the Catholic parochial school there. She met her future husband on a visit to Atchison and they were married February 2, 1904, at St. John's church in Beloit. Mrs. Latenser's friends who remember when she came to Atchison, said that she was one of the most beautiful brides in the city. Her fun-loving and spirited personality made her all the more attractive. Before her marriage she was the belle of every social event she attended. Mrs. Latenser retained her zest for life through the years and even when stricken with serious and painful illness she was able to carry on and make those about her feel the force of her charm and personality. She inherited the wit of her Irish forbears and loved nothing better than a good round of repartee with friends. She possessed all the womanly graces and was a wonderful mother and wife. Good music was one of her hobbies and she was aso interested in art. One of the tragedies in Mrs. Latenser's life was the loss of her only son, Carl Herman, from appendicitis, at the age of 13. Four years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Latsener built the attractive home at 1110 Santa Fe street where they resided until a few years ago. Mrs. Latenser was a devout member of Sacred Heart church. TWO DAUGHTERS Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Collins Ervin, who is director of the music department of St. Scholastica academy, Canon City, Colo., and Miss Eileen Latenser, an employee of the Exchange National bank; a grand- daughter, Sallie Jane Liggett, Canon City, Colo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Barton, Topeka, and Mrs. Ella Wagner, Beloit. Mrs Ervin and her daughter Sallie Jane, will arrive this evening. Mrs. John E. Reardon, Waukegan, Ill., a cousin, will arrive Tuesday morning, and Mrs. Alfred Lasnier, Concordia, a niece, will arrive Wednesday.
