A few days since County Clerk Rouse received a letter from an attorney at Peoria, Illinois containing the following clipping found in a Peoria newspaper. So far Mr. Rouse has been unable to find any record evidence, but as is well known, the early records are in none too good shape, and it may be possible there is some foundation for the story. Can any old settler explain? Below is the clipping in full: L. N Corbin, of Canton, Ill., was in the city yesterday, looking for a claimant to property worth at least $8,000 and he succeeded in finding her without much trouble. Her name is Pearl Golliday and she works at 410 Hamilton street. Nineteen years ago a gambler reputed to be worth in the neighborhood of $2,000,000 was living in Medicine Lodge, Kas. At that time Medicine Lodge, a straggling hamlet on the boundless prairies of bleeding Kansas, and Barber county contined only a few venturesome souls. Those who lived there were anxious for more people to come and they offered every sort of inducement. This gambler, whose name unfortunately could not be learned yesterday seemed to be a sort of primitive improvement association in Barber county. He owned several beautiful and valuable tracts of land in that vicinity and one day he offered one of the choicest bits of property in Medicin Lodge to the first child born in Barber county. He went further and made out certificates to this effect and placed them on record. A few weeks later he became engaged in an altercation and was shot, dying a few hours afterwards. His property went to eastern relatives as it was nearly all represented by cash, jewelry and horses. He owned considerable land and this was turned into money and proceeds given to his heirs and assigns. New people moved in rapidly and the gambler was soon forgotten, and with him his offer of a home to the first child bornin Barber county. Amond those who came to Medicine Lodge about this time were the parents of Pearl Golliday, and a few weeks later little Pearl first opened her black eyes on the wonders of this world. Her father was a shiftless, roving, improvisident man and the family did not remain long in Barber county. They traveled over the west and seven years ago returned to Canton. Sometime after returning to Illinois, Pearl's mother died and her father forsook his children to gratify his roving, nomadic disposition. He married the second time, but Pearl not liking the treatment she received at home, concluded to work her own way. Four years ago she came to Peoria and secured employment as a dining room girl andhas mader her own living ever sine. Ten years ago she heard that she was the first child born in Barber County and was consequently entitled to the bonus offered by the gambler. Her father, however, knowing that he would not get the use of the money, made no effort to secure it for his daughter. L. N. Corbin, who is a skilled detective, heard of the case and volunteered his services without remuneration. He was thoroughly acquainted with the western people and country and about a year ago started to get the facts in the case. Other business called him to Arizona for a time, but he returned to Medicine Lodge and looked up the data in Miss Golliday's case. He secured the recorder's certificate that Pearlwas the first child born in the county, and also the warranty for the property. Armed with these documents he called on her yesterday and apprised her of her good fortune. A Transcript reporter called on Miss Golliday yesterday evening, at 410 Hamilton street, to ask her a few questions about the case. She is a black eyed girl of neat and lady-like manner. She became radiant when the object of the visit was made known, and admitted that the facts as given above were true. "When will you go and take possession of property?" I hardly know exactly, but will go as soon as I can." "Do you know where it is located?" "Yes, sir. It is in Barber county near by or in Medicine Lodge, Kas." "Then it is a farm." "Yes, sir. But the agreement also states that there shall be a house built on it according to my directions and the donor provided a sufficient sum of money for this purpose." "Who has this money?" "I understand it held in trust by the officials of Barber county." "Were there any other stipulation?" "No, sir, only I also get $1,000 in cash in addition to the farm and house." "The agreement does not say then that you must marry before a certain age in order to gain possession." "Oh, no, sir, I hope not." The reporter hoped so too, and cast an appealing glance in her direction, but she was looking out of the window and he saw the case was hopeless. "Have you an attorney or anyone to represent your claims in Medicine Lodge?" "No sir, I shall go myself. Mr. Corbin has secured all the certificates and I can step into possession without any further ceremony." "Who told you about this matter first?" "I heard of it ten years ago, but my father made no effort to secure the property for me and I could do nothing alone. I then talked with Mr. Corin, the detective, and he offered his services. He and two other detectives attended to all the details." Miss Golliday has many friends in this city and Canton who will rejoice to learn of her stroke of good fortune. Those with whom she is associated speak very highly of her, and say the unlooked for prize could not have come to a more worthy young person.
