Birth: 4-19-1911 Death: 11-25-2005 b. Medicine Lodge ks Barber co, The last of nine children in the family of Matthew P. & Alice A. (Whitehead) DeWitt. She graduated from Medicine Lodge High School and attended Kansas State University where her roommate was her niece, and good friend, Dorothy Stevens Mcllree. A lifetime resident of Medicine Lodge, she was a homemaker. On March 1, 1930 she married O. "Red" Mills, her high school sweetheart. That union lasted until Red's death on July 12, 1982. Ruth supported the war effort as acting post master from 1943-1945 while Cpl. Mills was taking an all expense paid trip to Italy courtesy of the U.S. Army Air Corps. She was a charter member of the "Self Culture Club", an avid bridge player, a great cook, wonderful mother, two time chairman of the Barber County Democratic central committee, and once won a blue ribbon at the Barber County Fair for her Sand Hill Plum Jelly. Ruth and Red enjoyed trips on ocean going freighters and saw much of South America and the Orient. She was preceded in death by her daughter Nancy Alice Mills Carpio, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.
